Rising Stars: Meet Kimberly Lang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Lang.

Hi Kimberly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I dabbled in photography as a teenager and always loved having a camera in my hand but I was never brave enough to put myself out there for fear of not being taken seriously, so I stuck to landscape photography and took a few photos here and there for a local pageant agency. Life happened and I stepped away from the camera… here I am now, 29 and a full-time portrait photographer. All thanks to my almost 7-year-old son Jensen. Having him is exclusively what made me pick the camera back up. I personally don’t have a whole lot of photos from when I was little, and as someone that has just lost both of her parents, memories are more needed/welcome than ever. I love being able to capture families, their sweet moments, and all of the milestones along the way. I have clients that I’ve taken photos of since they were in the womb and are now going into elementary school, that’s the coolest thing ever for me and most certainly why I do what I do!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh, there’s been a handful of struggles for sure, but easily the biggest struggle was Covid! I’m sure a lot of people would agree when I say that Covid most definitely made me think my job as a photographer was done with and that I would never be able to do what I loved again… having no bookings/weddings for the foreseeable future was a very frightening time for me. But I’m back and better than ever!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a lifestyle portrait photographer focused on all things family, children, engagements, weddings, births, etc.! I’d say I specialize in couples’ and children’s portraits. Something about getting a kid to genuinely laugh and capture it is my favorite. The same goes for couples and capturing the love that two humans can share, I just love! I’m proud of how far I’ve come in every aspect of the world, I basically charged pocket change even just a couple of years ago, couldn’t edit to save my life, and worked my way up to where I’m at and the coolest part of that is, almost all of those clients I started out with are still with me today!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
As I previously mentioned before, my son has everything to do with why I take photos… but his father and my fiance Jd are most definitely credit worthy when it comes to being my biggest supporter along this journey. He has been by my side while I’ve edited at 3 in the morning in bed, he’s talked me down from giving up on everything when something goes wrong or doesn’t go how it’s supposed to. I’ve picked his brain for an embarrassing amount of math questions and just overall opinions. He plays a very big part in my entire being as a photographer and business owner and deserves a whole lot of credit.
