Daily Inspiration: Meet Gabby Kalil

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Kalil.

Hi Gabby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! A little about me, I always loved to create and be crafty. I started by just making things for my sorority students (I used to be the campus Fraternity/Sorority Life advisor) and dabbled in epoxy resin when I found out it could seal glitter so that it wouldn’t flake off. Then when my position was cut due to the pandemic, I was looking for something to do and fill the time. I used to create as an outlet for my anxiety and depression so this seemed like the perfect fit. My friends started ordering and their friends and then it became a business. I’ve loved learning and growing and connecting with others. My favorite part is when they get their products and love them as much as I do! It’s fun to combine my passions and a customer’s passions into something tangible. Besides crafting, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, love reading and binge-watching TV shows.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth or easy road. There were a lot of mistakes and growing pains. Messed up designs, wasted materials, and more. The funniest mistake was forgetting I had left the fan on when I started pouring glitter. It went all over me and everywhere. Rumor has it that there is still glitter on the floor. But for each of those struggles, I learned and I grew. Creating a business and finding the balance between hobby and full-time business has been a struggle. This started as an outlet and a way to cope with anxiety. I didn’t want that to creep back in and forget the fun and joy creating brings me. It is an everyday effort to maintain a balance. And knowing that growing takes time and won’t be the same as another creator’s journey, but will be at my own speed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main products are custom and unique double-walled stainless steel tumblers with glitter, mica powder, colorant, etc. designed and sealed with epoxy resin. I also offer other office and home accessories to add a little extra flair for those who want unique pieces.

I’m most proud of my tumbler surprise boxes. I saw a need as a lot of my customers wanted a tumbler but couldn’t decide on a design. I offer seasonal/holiday-themed boxes as well as a box where you can pick your theme.

I make it a point to order my materials and supplies from other small businesses. When you shop with me, you’re not only supporting my small business but others’ as well.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice would be to start. If you’re waiting on “the right time” you’re going to be waiting forever because there is no “right time” there is only now. Make sure you have a strong circle of supporters because there will be plenty of people wishing for you to fail. I wish I had been reminded not to compare myself to another creator’s journey. That it’s okay to grow my business at my speed. The imposter syndrome is real and I wish I had told myself not to let it get to me. I had to crawl before I could walk and hopefully one day I’ll be running.

Never forget that if you feel like the market is oversaturated, go look at the bread aisle in a grocery store/market. There are many brands selling bread and there is room for all of them! It’s okay to have ups and downs and you’ll be constantly evolving and changing. For me, it’s common for a customer who saw another creator’s piece and wants me to do something similar, or there will be a trend and for whatever reason it just doesn’t take off with my audience. That can be discouraging but don’t give up and keep trying new things. It takes one video to go viral or take off and you’ll find your way. Don’t be scared of new forms of marketing. I love that with a small business I get to know my customers and create relationships. Be authentically you and you’ll do amazing!
