Today we’d like to introduce you to Dianne Davis.
Hi Dianne, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I am a board-certified dermatologist and a fellowship-trained cosmetic dermatologic surgeon practicing in Dallas, TX. I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK, and my father was a huge influence in my life. He too was a physician, and given I was a daddy’s girl; I wanted to do everything just like my dad. Once I graduated from high school, I attended Tuskegee University with plans to major in biology and become a physician.
After graduating from Tuskegee University with a Bachelor of Science degree, I moved to New Orleans, LA to attend Tulane University, where I received a Master of Science degree in Cell & Molecular Biology. It was during that time that I started to develop acne that really affected my confidence and self-esteem. After many trials of products that minimally helped, I finally saw a dermatologist that not only treated my acne but helped me to regain my confidence as well. It was during this time that my eyes were opened to a field of medicine where I felt I could have a huge impact on the patients that I treat.
Upon graduating from Tulane University, I received my Doctor of Medicine degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
I completed an internal medicine internship and dermatology residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where I served as chief resident. While in residency, I was influential in coordinating the first Skin of Color Symposium helping to promote awareness of the unique features of the skin of color from both a medical and cosmetic viewpoint.
Following residency, I graduated from an American Society of Dermatologic Surgery accredited cosmetic dermatologic surgery fellowship program under the directorship of Mark B. Taylor, MD at Gateway Aesthetic Institute & Laser Center in Salt Lake City, UT.
I have expertise in the skin of color, laser and light-based procedures, neuromodulators, injectable fillers, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), sclerotherapy, body contouring, acne scars, laser blepharoplasties, and tumescent liposuction. I have authored several journal articles and textbook chapters and presented my work at local, regional, and national meetings. I have also served as an investigator on trials for several industry sponsors.
I am a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery, and the Women’s Dermatologic Society.
In my spare time, I love traveling, dancing, and doing hot yoga.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Probably one of the toughest challenges I have had to face was my non-traditional pathway to getting into medical school. After completing graduate school at Tulane University, I had horrible test-taking anxiety, and I struggled with the entrance exam to get into medical school. While most students take the exam one to two times, it took me 3 years and 5 MCAT exams to finally get into medical school. There were plenty of times that I felt like giving up and considered that maybe medicine was not in the cards for me. However, I never saw myself doing anything else, so I faced my fears head-on and sought the help of mentors and therapists to help me overcome my fears and face the standardized exam head-on. When I look back on this time, it taught me perseverance and determination, and I could not imagine what I would have done had I not continued to pursue my dreams. This is a story I tell so many students who ever think about giving up their dreams to go to medical school or whatever it is that they desire to do in life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in both medical and cosmetic dermatology. My cosmetic fellowship allowed me to become well trained in both non-invasive and invasive body contouring procedures, acne scars, lasers, and energy-based devices for skin of color.
Several fun facts about me include:
– I am a former NFL cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints
– I was a winning contestant on Wheel of Fortune
