Today we’d like to introduce you to Rolando Reyna.
Hi Rolando, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Well, I can remember back to kindergarten. In my classroom there an illustrated alphabet pinned to the wall. Each letter corresponded with an image of a person in their occupation. The first letter was, “A” for “The Artist,” which depicted a person painting at an easel. I sometimes joke about this, but who really knows.
When I got older, I found an Art History book in the school library, and as I flipped through the pages, I would wonder where the end was. That question of the completion of time, history, and the act of painting itself became something meaningful to try to chase down.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been very fortunate in two ways. I was supported by great teachers, mentors, and family members. Secondly, I was able to narrow down my options. When faced with a challenge, I could either say I’ve found that end I was talking about, or I can press on with an active will. I still think this today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in a somewhat traditional manner using oil paint on canvas. The pictures I make are mythical, and are made to provide a way of examining heritage and cultural remembrance. Much of my contact with that heritage comes from the purview of growing up in rural town where I spent my time hunting, rodeoing, and constructing things outdoors. Without museums or classes, my preconditioning for a career in art academia was informed by nature and having a utilitarian skill set.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One lesson that becomes truer with age is to treat all people, including yourself, with dignity and fairness. Advantages are always switching up and trading places, so you never truly know who you will find yourself depending on, and when.
