Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Velez.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
As young as twelve years old, I was extremely drawn to editing and digital design. By the time I reached high school, I took my digital camera everywhere with me, and I would edit all of the pictures my mom would take with her high-end DLSR camera. The night of my high school graduation I won a camera at Project Graduation, and that was the start of Skye Image Photography. It has now been about 11.5 years since I started my photography venture, and I am more passionate about what I do today than ever. Everything I have goes into what I do, and what I do brings me pure joy. I feel honored every time someone chooses me to capture their special moments. They’re not just pictures. It’s one of the only things you can do for your family to freeze time. You will hold onto these pictures for a lifetime to be passed down from generation to generation. I am so happy to now be offering my services nationwide as a destination and elopement photographer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for me and my business. Within the first year of me offering my services to the public, unfortunately, passion for photographer dwindled down quickly. As I mentioned before I started my business right out of high school. I was a full-time college student as Howard Payne University taking 18 hours, I was working a Payless Shoes, I had become a fitness instructor working at a local gym, I was selling advocare, and photography was just the icing on the cake. I had overloaded myself, and in doing that, I was no longer able to enjoy photography. Through the years, I’ve gone through many seasons of life which have caused me to feel this way, like becoming a mom and working through postpartum depression. In the end, photography has always been something I could pick back up, and I’ve now learned to use it at therapy during my low moments. I could never see me putting my camera in my closet again.
As you know, we’re big fans of Skye Image Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Skye Image Photography was always a business where I offered any type of photo session. In the beginning, nothing was off the table for me. Over the course of 11 years, I have learned what I enjoy most, and most importantly, what I have the most skill in. Now I specialize in destination weddings, elopements, weddings, and boudoirs. I also love photographing acrobatic dancers. One of the most unique services I offer is being able to travel nationwide or even another country (I’m passport ready) to capture your wedding day.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
One of the books that has been a real eye opener for me, and I believe has helped me to be the best me I can be to those around me (aside from the Bible) is the 5 Love Languages. I think being able to understand those around you, how they operate, and how they perceive things differently to you is they key to a happy life.
