Meet Beverly M. Valencia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly M. Valencia.

Beverly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was in high school, my dad always asked me if I would want to open a salon when I gained more experience in the beauty industry, and I always said, “we’ll, duh, of course!” In 2019, a year after graduating from high school, my dad called me one day and told me there were going to be some suites built down the street from his mechanic shop and asked me to go check it out. We talked about the contract, and I was really confused as to why my dad even sent me. I explained to my dad in detail what was discussed with the landlord, and my dad asked me, “Quieres poner un salon?” meaning “do you want a salon?”. I was like, “sign me up!” Now, my dad and I own businesses in the same street.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Unfortunately, it has not been easy as I opened the salon right when COVID hit. It was definitely a rocky start since we were forced to close for a couple months due to the pandemic. Luckily, everything fell into place slowly.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I got my license when I was in high school as it was part of the cosmetology magnet program. I was 17, and I worked for mainly barbershops, so I’ve specialized in men’s hair for around 5 years. However, I’ve been doing women’s hair, waxing, and skin care as well for the last few years. I’m most proud of not only being a Mexican American business owner at 22 years old since the age of 19 but also because I’m a single mom to a beautiful toddler named Anaheim. It’s not easy leaving her with my mom to work long hours, but I’m lucky to have a family that supports me and cares for both of our futures. What sets me apart is that although I’m young, I really invest as much time and dedication to my work as possible. I have an amazing example to follow since my parents are successful and hardworking business owners.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My dad is my mentor. He worked for other people for years before he was able to open his mechanic shop GTO’s Alignment. He’s been up and running for 10 years and remained successful even after switching location one time a few years back. My advice would be to work for other people before opening your own business. I worked for many salons prior to opening Beverly’s Salon & Spa. Gain experience and ask a lot of questions from people who are great at what they do. Don’t be afraid to learn more, take constructive criticism, or be the least intelligent in the room. Always surround yourself with people you want to be like. Having business friends is a great way to network and grow as a business and as an individual, and also never be afraid to ask for help. My support system is what keeps me motivated.
