Meet Kate and Joe Lundgren of Cutting Edge Pediatric and Adult Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate and Joe Lundgren. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Kate and Joe Lundgren are the proud owners of Cutting Edge Pediatric & Adult Therapy (CEPT), an occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and applied behavioral analysis clinic which opened in Allen, Texas in June 2013 and Mansfield, Texas in July 2017. Their Mansfield facility is currently expanding through the build out of their new 22,000 square foot therapy center estimates to open in Q4 of 2023. Cutting Edge is a full-service clinic; it specializes in individuals with special needs, spectrum-related disorders, and sensory integration dysfunction. Because of their personal experience and passion, their hearts are committed to helping families identify their child’s needs and achieve the child’s goals in a loving, safe and therapeutic environment. Residing in California, Joe was offered an employment opportunity with a Fortune 500 company at its corporate headquarters, so the Lundgrens moved to Texas in 1997. Shortly thereafter, both of their boys were diagnosed with Autism. Trenton, who is now thirty, has Asperger’s Syndrome, and Spencer, who is now twenty-six, has Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

Kate was an occupational therapist at the time, specializing in patients suffering from strokes and head injuries. After the boys’ diagnosis, Kate and Joe dove “head and heart” first into the field of Autism to understand what that diagnosis meant and would mean to the future of their family. Kate quickly developed an all-inclusive treatment plan for the boys; however, at that time, the options for treatment and the availability of information were limited. The boys’ past and present therapies include, but were and are not limited to: Applied Behavioral Analysis, Speech, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy Intensive Programs, Interactive Metronome, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Music Therapy, Aquatic Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Listening Program/Bone Conduction, Craniosacral/Myofascial, Oral Motor/Feeding, Fine and Gross Motor Skills training, Hippotherapy and recreational, massage, visually-based therapies, and Biomedical treatments for the boys. They continue with many of these but have built an amazing amount of knowledge over the past two decades.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Kate and Joe built Cutting Edge with the passion they had from trying to find help for their own boys; in order to do this takes an immense amount of time and funding that is dependent on the family’s insurance policies. As we all know, insurance companies can be challenging, yet at Cutting Edge, they try to be in network with as many insurance carriers as possible, which allows more families a lower-cost treatment option for their children.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cutting Edge Pediatric and Adult Therapy?
The Cutting-Edge Differential? People – from the Directors of First Impressions to their therapists they truly work diligently at meeting clients’ and their family’s needs. At Cutting Edge, the therapists are continually challenged to be at the forefront of treatments to provide the Cutting-Edge Differential to clients. At Cutting Edge, service is the lifeblood and pinnacle of the organization, and they believe everything flows from it. We must not, in an effort to make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
In addition to their dedication to Cutting Edge, its staff, and clients, they are both on the board of Autism Speaks Executive Leadership Council in DFW. Kate also serves on the board of Grace Lakes Ministry, a non-profit organization that provides Equine Assisted Services that facilitate the development of a wide range of individuals with disabilities. Joe also serves the city of Allen, Texas where they reside as he sits on the Board of Adjustment, Building and Standards Commission, and Sign Control Board.
