Hidden Gems: Meet Elena Moraru of Elena Moraru Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Moraru.

Hi Elena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Moldova, Eastern Europe. At 20 years old, I moved to the United States and decided to attend design school in Chicago. I took an internship right in my first semester of school, and by the end of my studies, I completed 5 internships which gave me valuable insight into what kind of projects I want to be doing as an interior designer. I naturally drifted towards residential design. I worked in retail, commercial, and residential design companies, where I was part of incredible teams that delivered world-class interior projects in America and abroad. In 2017 I decided to move to Dallas to build a family and after a year of working for Restoration Hardware in the city, I received multiple signs that it was time to venture on my own and serve homeowners under my own design company. That’s how Elena Moraru Interiors was born, and today, I serve clients in the DFW area and around. In the meantime, I also became a mother, writer, and published author.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. As an immigrant, starting life from zero in a foreign country while you are basically still a teenager is quite a challenge. I have some very valuable experience on my shoulders as an interior designer, but very few people know that probably every HR person from every interior design firm in Chicago, Wisconsin, and Dallas has seen my name on an application at least once. I had so many times in my life moments when I thought maybe I am in the wrong industry doing the wrong thing, even though I always felt very passionate about designing interiors. It was this passion that pulled me and kept me on track to keep going no matter how many rejections and disappointments I have experienced along the way. We sometimes tend to be very hard on ourselves and disregard every little experience that in reality, is a huge stepping stone towards our evolution as a professional, business owners, and human beings.

We’ve been impressed with Elena Moraru Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Elena Moraru Interiors is an interior design studio in Dallas serving clients in DFW Metroplex and around. I am the founder and interior designer that executes all projects. Our signature style is a combination of a European aesthetic, minimalism, natural materials, and mid-century interior architecture.

We believe a home is a sanctuary, a place for rest, for finding comfort, safety, and belonging; a place for calming our senses, for rejuvenating our minds and spirit; a shelter where we find relief from the busy, chaotic, and stressful outside world. These ideas drive every project that Elena Moraru Interiors delivers.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In residential design, I believe we will witness a shift in the upcoming years, where homeowners will seek interior design services that emphasize mental health and physical and spiritual well-being. I think that in some countries, this shift started to happen. We already see that the younger adult generations are not so interested in their home to feel only luxurious; they want their homes to really work for them, meaning that they want to find peace and calm because the outside world becomes more and more distracting and chaotic.
