Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Washington.
Hi Robert, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello, I’m Robert. Most of my friends call me Rob. First, I want thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I am truly honored to share my story with you.
I purchased my first camera in 2018 when I moved to New York. I was so inspired by my surroundings and wanted to capture unforgettable moments. I began photographing my fur baby, Braxton, taking pictures of popular landmarks and monumental buildings all over the city such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty, etc. I’d also use my roommate for practice from time to time. Fast forward to 2020, I found a new appreciation for photography when I marched in the George Floyd protests. I was able to capture real moments and emotions of people who wanted to be heard in the fight for justice and against police brutality. That’s when I knew that I wanted to get more serious about photography.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is not always a smooth ride. There are times when the road gets a little bumpy. But I believe that’s what makes us stronger as individuals. It makes us appreciate even more the hard work, time, and dedication we put into perfecting our craft. One of the hardest things I’ve encountered was related to me getting in my own way. There was a lack of confidence I had in myself and in my work. I was afraid to share what I had been working on out of fear of what others may think. I had to “take myself out to the woodshed,” an old saying from my parents when it was time for tough love. I needed to realize that even the greatest started where I am today. And there’s never a perfect time to do it. I just have to do it. And I did. Another hurdle I’ve come across is the juggle between my corporate career and my photography business; finding time to invest in my craft. Of course, like as countless others. I am rising on the corporate ladder. Although this is what supports me financially, it can take away time for creating. However, I believe my aspirations would lead me to become a full-time entrepreneur. It takes a lot of guts to make such a huge decision. I solute those whose done it and thriving. It’s not easy but it’s quite motivating to see others step out and take risks. I know if they can do it, so can I.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BossImageStudios, LLC?
BossImageStudios, LLC, is the name of my business. Currently specializing in portrait and event photography. #BIS was silently created in 2020 while I was living in New York City. It is an extension of my Instagram name Robb_DaBoss. I gave myself this name many years ago. During this time, I was not in the best mental space. I wasn’t really happy with who I was, and I struggled with confidence. I’d always been given compliments on my appearance and talents. Close friends and family have poured into my life many times. I had difficulty seeing what everyone else saw in me. There was always something I felt was missing. But One day, I took myself to the woodshed, lol, and told myself that I am in control. I am the Boss of my happiness. I am in control of the energy I allow in my space. I am the Boss of my peace. I am in control of my confidence. It is my responsibility to put in the work. I needed to love myself more. I didn’t know where to start. But at that moment, I realized that it doesn’t take experience to be the boss; it takes execution. I just have to do it. I began booking “Just Because” shoots so that I could begin finding my confidence. Capturing moments where I felt good about myself helped me to enhance my self-esteem. It was such the confidence booster I needed. And if there were times I felt low, I could always go back in time and look at those images that made me feel good. It’s motivating me. It keeps me going. I thought if this helped me, it could help someone else. Whether you have a business that needs promo shots or needs to be updated headshots for your professional profiles to get better job leads, or just want to bring your sexy back, that’s what I am here to capture for you. I want you to feel confident in your purpose, the same mindset I have for photography. I want to capture moments for people that they will cherish and always remember. But this is only the beginning for BossImageStudios. I plan to launch a full array of services in the near future.
In September 2021, I moved to Dallas, primarily to focus on photography and build my portfolio. I didn’t let anyone know I moved back; I just wanted to make a subtle transition so I can remain focused. I met up with a few friends to catch up and let them know why I was here. They instantly put my name out there and helped me get gigs for events, birthday shoots, etc. In Early 2022, I introduced BossImageStudios, LLC. It has been an amazing journey. Full of support from so many people who genuinely want to see me win. I feel unstoppable. And I can do anything I put my mind to. I’m most proud of the growth I’ve had, both personally and professionally, as a photographer. I see growth in my confidence, in my creative space, and I see how it translates in my photos. I have so much more to learn, and I’m really excited to see where #BIS will be a year from now.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was born and raised in Tulsa, Ok. I grew up in a very southern household. That’s church 3-4 times per week and in the house before the street lights came on, lol. I was very active growing up. I acted in multiple communities plays at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. I played basketball and piano all throughout elementary school. In middle school, I was introduced to the choir and band, where I played the clarinet. And this continued throughout high school, where I attended Booker T. Washington. I made quite a few friends, but I was always a bit shy until I was comfortable with you. I was always a jokester and loved to make people laugh. I was also very serious. I had a tough exterior, but if you broke through those barriers, you were very special to me.
I have a great love for music, hence piano lessons, band, and singing in the choir. Music is very tranquil and therapeutic for me and also another passion of mine. During my senior year in high school, I auditioned and received a full vocal music scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I was able to travel the world with the university’s internationally acclaimed Vesper Choir. We toured multiple cities such as Rome, Venice, Florence & Milan and even had the opportunity to sing at the Vatican. I was truly inspired by culture, from the sculptures and art pieces to the cathedrals and fashion, etc. By far one of my favorite destinations. I remember taking so many photos while visiting, and now it gives me an opportunity to go back in time to review for inspiration and motivation.
