Exploring Life & Business with Brett Hicks of NIKO venue + studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Hicks.

Hi Brett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the event + hospitality industry since my first job at 16. This led me to pursue a degree in Hospitality Management from the University of North Texas. After graduating with my bachelor’s, I knew it wouldn’t be long until I started my own business. I had been taking product photos and portraits “casually” for years but was ready to take it more seriously with the emergence of social media as a business tool. Now, I own a natural light photography + videography studio which functions as a small event space (think birthday parties, corporate mixers, small weddings). I also continue to take on photography clients and find the most reward in helping small businesses understand how they want their brand to appear. Along with my photo studio and creative clients, my husband and I run an interactive mirror photo booth rental company that is a HIT at all the weddings and corporate events we have booked so far.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
During the first 6 months of our marriage, my husband/business partner (Jory) and I general contracted our first ever home. A passion project of his for many years, this was the true test of how we could fair in the short-term rental space. When designing our home, we created a section of the house that operates as an apartment. We “house-hack” by renting that space to others and covering our mortgage.

Being raised and educated in Denton and then moving to a smaller town in Oklahoma, I feel that I often have to convince people of their need for a strong online presence. However, I feel like I am finally making my mark and collaborating with a lot of like-minded individuals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about NIKO venue + studio?
NIKO is the first ever natural light photography + videography studio in Durant. It is truly a blank canvas (with a ton of plants and cool backdrops, of course) for any type of shoot or event. My background in both hospitality management with a focus in event design, alongside my business partners construction and carpentry skills, allow for a deep understanding of the way events function and what is needed to make an event successful and beautiful. There are lots of talented people in my community who need a place to express that, and I believe that NIKO will become a hub for expression for all.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Don’t take the first no. Ask again and then ask someone else later.
