Inspiring Conversations with Libby Jackson of Carla Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Jackson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved dogs, and a few years ago, I found my passion of sewing. I then created a mask business during COVID, which helped me figure out that I love all things business!! When COVID restrictions lightened, I decided, why not combine two of my favorite things! That is when I created Carla Collective. Summer of 2021, I got to work making bandanas and collars. Lots of mistakes were made, and a lot of the products went to my own dogs when I first started, but I came up with my patterns and got started! Ever since then, I have been going to farmers’ markets and various events around town. I love this business so much and am so grateful to everyone who has helped me get to where I am today!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! In my opinion, there is no such thing as an easy business. There are many challenges that I can face in my business, some big, some small. For example, sometimes I will buy a large quantity of fabric that I think will sell really well, and it doesn’t! Another example is when I’m trying really hard to get my content and business out there, but I don’t get any sales!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Carla Collective is a dog accessories business that I created in my sophomore year of high school! I decided to incorporate the names of both my dogs, Carl and Ella, to create “Carla”. They are my world, and I wouldn’t have this business without them.

Currently, I sell handmade dog bandanas and collars, as well as matching keychains. All dog bandanas and collars are adjustable, durable, and most importantly, adorable! I love meeting all the pups that come to my markets and seeing them in their Carla Collective accessories!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I am very lucky to have a mom who is very supportive and also great at networking. She introduced me to many groups in my community, such as the Keller Chamber of Commerce. Another thing that has been instrumental to my networking is Instagram. Through Instagram, I have been able to grow my client base and have opportunities that I wouldn’t have without a social media account.
