Meet Nice and Ted Sparks of DoorServe Dry Cleaning & Laundry Mobile App in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nice and Ted Sparks.

Nice and Ted, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
DoorServe Dry Cleaning and Laundry was the brainchild of Ted and Nice Sparks.

We were both working professionals at the time of the conception of this idea and were spurred by a weekly task neither one of us like to do. That task was dropping off and picking up our dry cleaning. Although it wasn’t a tedious task but it was sometimes time-consuming, frustrating due to traffic and forgetful at times when you needed either to drop-off or pick-up.

On one fateful occasion, I went to the cleaners to pick up some items and there was a long line with impatient customers. I happened to be in the back of a neighbor of mine who voiced his frustration about the process and at that moment it came to me that there must be a simpler way to do this. With that thought, I sketched together a process that would involve modernizing the process into a mobile application.

Being in the field of computer technology myself, it was fairly simple to script out a process that would involve placing an order for requested services and allow the customer to get prompt delivery and pick-up, eliminating the frustration of this task for many people like myself. I researched the process to see if there were any companies in the area that was doing something similar to this idea and to my surprise, there were virtually none operating as such.

Now there were establishments that offered pick-up and delivery service but were limited to travel radius, scheduling, and mark-up pricing. Our idea had no boundaries in terms of the brick and mortar restrictions of travel nor would we incur the overhead of the brick and mortar.  We would operate from a virtual standpoint. With the idea well vetted and carefully written out I called in the executioner, my lovely wife, Nice Sparks. When I originally explained the idea to her the initial reaction was “Where would the location of the store be?”

I explained the store location would be in the palm of our hands. After a night of thought, the idea and the possible opportunities were clear and conclusive to her and me. Nice’s vision was divine and so heartily believed that we sprang into action quickly and cautiously to get DoorServe designed, built and available in the mobile marketplace. Our mobile app is available on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore.

We are in partnership with Fort Worth Laundry and Dry Cleaners which has been in operation since 1927. We are currently operating in NE and NW Tarrant County were we are servicing 26 zip codes and still growing. We have plans to expand to Dallas County, particularly Frisco and Plano as we envision a greater demand for our service offering.  We anticipate these areas are becoming more diverse as living and employment opportunities for millennials and professional working classes continue to grow.

Today we are seeing growth opportunities and plan to enhance our business model as we take on new areas and market to a growing economy. Our goal is to grow DoorServe into a stable brand and hopefully move our concept across the country and provide opportunities in communities where people can benefit from both our services and be inspired by our faith and dedication for success.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Thus far, the process has been smooth. Since we cautiously planned our business launch we have not incurred the possible issues new businesses face such as cash flow and overhead. Although we definitely like to see more growth financially, we are patient and consistent which always wins the day. Our struggles are just trying to change the conditioning of how people do their dry cleaning and bundled laundry from an archaic model to a modernized version.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory goes back to when I was 6 years old and in first grade. We had what they called an outdoor adventure day which included potato sack races, dodge ball, running, playing and all sorts of outdoor activities.

One of the most memorable activities was a seemingly amusing clown. The clown was running and jumping with all the kids and squirting water from a flower lapel. It was a good time and I didn’t want the fun to stop. When it was time to go, I remember the teacher walking me over to my mom’s car and placing me in the backseat to get ready for the ride home and without looking up at the front seat I heard my mother’s voice ask “How was my day at school?”

I told her about the clown and he squirted me in the face with a flower and at that moment my mom turned towards that backseat and said “Did he squirt you with one of these?”. And to my surprise and delight, it was my mom who was dressed as the clown that I had so much fun with that day.
