Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Serrato.
Hi Jose, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I had been interested in photography for as long as I can remember but didn’t start taking it seriously until around 2010. I started photographing bands that my friends were in as well as any event my sister would ask me to go to. I spent many years learning how to shoot under different situations, which really helped me adapt to wherever I am. I gradually started to shoot bigger concerts and building my portfolio. From small clubs to stadium tours, I am currently living one of my biggest dreams, where I can combine my love of music and photography. Having artists come to me asking to cover their shows is a great feeling to add on top of everything.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest challenge has always been myself. Imposter syndrome takes up a big portion of my brain and it is a constant battle I have within myself. As long as I can keep that part under control, I can keep moving forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Of the different types of photography I do, concert photography is what I am most known for as it is the majority of the work I do. Portrait, landscape, and realty photography are types that I’ve done and still do, but you will most likely catch me in a photo pit at a concert than anything else. If there is one thing I can say I am proud of from the past few years is the reputation I have built with artists, venues, and fellow photographers. Building relationships and leaving a positive impression is very important to me. I’ve been told before that my editing style is different from most, so I suppose that sets me apart from others in this field. It’s not any better or worse, but just how I prefer my photos to look like.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Velton Hayworth of The Audio Head website helped me tons when I made the move to cover touring acts. He saw the work I was doing with local bands, and he made me a contributor to the website. The band Celestial L’amour were very supportive by having me out to cover their shows multiple times and even film a couple music videos for them. I really appreciate them for trusting in me to produce work for them. There have been many photographers that are very encouraging and helpful along the way. From veterans that have years of experience and advice to new up incoming photogs that have new creative views. And, of course, family and friends who continue to be supportive by sharing my work or by just telling me they like what I’m doing.
