Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennisha Johnson.
Kennisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a love for crafting/creating. I am a self-proclaimed do-it-yourself-er! There’s so much joy I get from looking at something, and saying I can create that! Years ago, before I had kids, I would often redesign my kitchen chairs, headboards, and little things around the house. Knowing this, one day my sister pointed out a wreath on a neighbor’s door that she liked, and it inspired me to try to create a personalized one for her. A week later, I was at the hobby lobby every day, spending entirely too much money on things I didn’t need. After sharing the final look with those closest to me, the rest as they say; is history! From there my brand/business essentially created itself! Thankfully, I have an amazing tribe of friends and family whose support is relentless! Many of my orders for the first two years were from family! While it may have included many discounts, it allowed me to learn along the way. I realized that although I like creating decor year-round, Christmas is what I enjoy the most! Therefore, I’ve recently made the decision to add tree decorating to one of my services.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not at all. But it hasn’t been bad either. The struggles come in the form of trial and error. Learning about supply and demand, being confident in my brand/vision, and most importantly understanding two things: everyone isn’t my target audience, and everyone will not like what you create. I started out by pricing my creations based upon what I thought someone was willing to pay, instead of what they were actually worth. I still struggle with this a bit from time to time, but I have learned that there’s no joy into going into the negative at the expense of wanting to please others. This in turn has elevated me in my business.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create custom designs that bring magic to the home. My designs include seasonal wreaths, garlands, and tree decorating. My staple piece that’s brought me notoriety is a Christmas tree that originated from a Mannequin. The completion of that design ignited the fire that I needed to propel KK to the next level. My passion and love for creating is what sets me apart from all other crafters. I genuinely design from the heart and try to incorporate something special into every project I do. You will never find two of the same items with KK, because my customers are unique!
