Rising Stars: Meet Sharla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharla.

Hi Sharla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been performing in the arts since grade school. The first audition I ever went to was for Debbie Allen’s “Pepitos Story” I think I was 7. I took up violin in orchestra in grade school and would later join band in middle school where I would excel in both concert and marching band with tuba, sousaphone, baritone, and trombone. I did trombone for Jazz band. I joined the choir in 6th grade and started competing in 8th grade. I sang soprano one and two, (I had no lower register then) joined show choir, was cast in every musical production all 4 years at NCHS, and nominated for Betty Buckley award for my role in “Big River” I competed and placed top three in Texas all region area every year from 2001-2006 and eventually would make it as 1st chair soprano II in the Texas All-State choir my senior year with the help of my choir director Ms.Robin Holliman and my voice coach Dr. Raymond Shultz. I accepted a vocal ride and academic scholarship from Texas Wesleyan University in my hometown of Fort Worth, Texas I thought I wanted to sing opera forever but that changed. Between then and now I’ve literally done it all -from reference tracks, voiceovers, and voicemails for businesss in Dfw. Currently, I perform around the DFW and abroad and I sing background vocals.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Yea once I realized I was in my own way the road got smoother. Fear was my main struggle. Who gives a hoot what people think. Do you and do it the best!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in singing, songwriting, vocal arrangements and I’m a seamstress. I like an assortment of things. It’s hard for me to stay in once box ya know? Idk what I’m known for now, but I’ll be known for my music and fashion. My intent & tenacity sets me apart. I know I can do anything I set my mind to. I’m most proud of my songwriting abilities and making it out of my old way of thinking and interactions with others. It’s all in your head.

Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to the future and coming up with more music and clothing.
