Today we’d like to introduce you to Nnenna Jones.
Hi Nnenna, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I immigrated to the United States in 2013 and it was quite a pretty sail for me. Though, at some point, I juggled life and made various shades of lemonades with the lemon’s life threw me. Hey, I’m still up for making more. Ha! It was pretty hard leaving behind a life I’d always known, even though, prior, I had traveled quite extensively coupled with studying abroad. You’d think it would be business as usual, but no- It was quite grueling. Settling in a foreign country and calibrating my mind to make it home was not a walk in the park-But I did it. Yay!!
Professionally, I set out to be a medical doctor but eventually chose to tow the legal path. Looking back, I wish I did. On the bright side, I am a foreign licensed lawyer with a master’s degree in Marine and Environmental Law. I have held legal advisory roles in Nigeria, Germany, South Africa, and the United States. Also, I have a legal document preparation business. So, by day, you’d catch me doing all things immigration and in my past time, blogging about lifestyle and fashion on Instagram.
I am very entrepreneurial and will consider myself as one who wears too many hats. Today, I’ll focus on my creative side- all things fashion. I’d always pictured myself as a model strutting the runway in Milan. Well, spending 5 years to get a Law degree + law school, took front stage so my “MILAN-RUNWAY” dream was crushed. LOL.
I started blogging about fashion in 2020. My Instagram handle is @urbanfashstyles- Feel free to follow 🙂 Asides having friends and co-workers constantly turn to me for help in picking out outfits, I have always had a passion for fashion and styling clothes in unimaginable ways. I figured Instagram was the right platform to establish myself as an expert while creating relationships with other influencers and brands. My goal was just to create chic outfits using basic pieces found in an average woman’s wardrobe- primarily to help create simple style inspirations. Little did I know that this venture came with financial benefits- where brands actually ask you to create content for them in exchange for a fee. Wow! Cool, right?
I have had a lot of success and can proudly say I was featured on a fashion segment in ABC News- Today Show. Additionally, I have worked with big brands like Saksoff5th, Zappos, Stitch fix, MVMT, to mention but a few. It hasn’t really been easy having to keep up with brand’s timelines, specifics on shooting scenes, et al. Do I love it? Heck yeah! I always remember why I started in the first place — because of my hobbies and passions and it’s helped stop me from losing sight of doing what I love.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, nothing good comes easy, even Santa came with a clause. HAHA! Like I opined earlier, it has not really been easy juggling professional life with influencing. Most of the time, I get loads of messages from brands for collaborations- some within my niche and others outside my niche. I had to master the art of politely turning down collaborations because they were not just in my niche and do not align with my voice. Other times, some of the brands that make the cut expect an immediate turnaround- unrealistic for the most part, but a girl still has to keep her part of the bargain.
Overall, by finding my niche, doing some due diligence, and not taking on too much too quickly has helped me transform my passion into a successful business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I already touched on that. I am a foreign licensed lawyer by profession. Shortly after I relocated to the US, I became accredited by the US Department of Justice to practice U.S immigration law. I own a legal document preparation business and I specialize in filing immigration paperwork, filling out standard set documents related to uncontested divorces, etc. (Mijae Document Preparation Services)
Additionally, I turned my passion for fashion into a successful business- Fashion influencing on Instagram. My Instagram handle is @urbanfashstyles. In less than a year of being a fashion influencer, I was contacted by the head of fashion at Instagram to feature part of my reels on national TV- A fashion segment on Today Show- ABC News. That was the point I knew that being yourself and consistency will get you any and everywhere.
I am proud of where I am and where I’m headed. Have I made mistakes here and there? Yes, I have. Making mistakes is a part of life and an integral part of evolving, right? What matters is the ability to learn from them, right wrongs, and keep forging.
My passion for going above and beyond in all my undertakings- be it as a lawyer, entrepreneur, influencer, sets me apart from others. I see every opportunity as a reason to prove my ability to exceed expectations, and putting smiles on faces at all times is my ultimate goal.
What do you think about happiness?
My 6-year-old son, fiancé, close friends, and family contribute towards my happiness. Ultimately, living a purposeful life and knowing who I am in Christ make me happy.
