Meet Jasmine Ferrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Ferrell.

Hi Jasmine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I grew up with a love of food and trying creative meals, whether it was visiting new restaurants or cooking recipes taught to me by my grandmother. My love of food continued into my adulthood, with me spending countless hours in the kitchen recreating recipes I’ve found online and experimenting with my own recipes. As a fitness enthusiast, I often found myself posting some of my healthier meals online on my social media accounts for friends to see. One day a friend asked if I would consider cooking meals for them for the week and they would pay me for my services. I initially said no, but after a few weeks of constant asking by them, and a few other friends, I decided to entertain the idea. That is when my meal-prepping side hustle began.

I was cooking for a few friends and family members for several months initially, rotating out my weekly options to keep it fun. I was busy but happy that I could assist people I knew with making healthier choices. A few months later the pandemic hit and most things were slowing down, so I opted to transition my side hustle from full lunch and dinner meals to desserts options. I was already adding healthier desserts to my meal prep menu so I figured this would be a smooth move. After a few months of brainstorming and experimenting recipes, I finally locked in on a few, which I continue to use in my business today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting and running a business has not been the smoothest path for me. Some of my biggest struggles initially were proper budgeting, as I am a creative person and like to add a little extra to things that may not need extra. It was also a struggle coming up with good marketing techniques and figuring out which items sell best. I had to realize that just because I loved a product and wanted it, it didn’t necessarily mean my customers wanted it as well.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work in the environmental field as a Storm Water Specialist. Many people have never heard that term before and while my job specifically encompasses many tasks, I essentially work to protect natural waterways in the city I work for. My duties include inspections of construction sites, industrial facilities, water testing in local streams and creeks, and public education on water quality and why protecting and caring for our natural waterways are important.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the restaurant and activity scene in Dallas. It’s very exciting to try out new businesses that are opening. My least favorite part of Dallas would be the growing traffic. Luckily for me, I am a Dallas native and know many side streets to maneuver through town at least.
