Today we’d like to introduce you to Sola Salako.
Hi Sola, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Well, my story is actually an interesting one. I didn’t realize until I was getting older that I was a creative person. It was not until I met my friend that I decided that we were going to start a business, specifically a hair business. So, we decided that we weren’t going to pay anyone to help showcase our hair, and at the same time, we were in college so funds were tight. In order to showcase our hair, we decided to learn how to make our own wigs. I remember vividly when I was in my work-study job and I would always watch videos on how to make wigs. If I have an interest in something and I don’t know how to do it I usually go on YouTube and research. After watching maybe 400 videos I then took the leap of faith of making my own wig. It didn’t come out too bad but there were a few bald spots haha. That was where everything began. Fast forward things didn’t go as we expected in the business and I decided to start making wigs. It started off as making it for others and as I got better, I deiced to start my own wig business. As time went on, I progressed more than I could imagine. Having a relationship with God is definitely a big factor for me. I feel we as human beings either have a key or a lock and God puts people in our lives to unlock the potential we don’t see. If I hadn’t met my friend in 2016, I am not sure if I would have had a deep love for hair, throughout my journey, I also realized that I could do more than just hair. I love taking photos, creating art pieces, and building things. God just has a way of orchestrating things and it is a beautiful thing even though we may not understand it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey was definitely not a smooth one. When we are destined to be great there will always be challenges, if not everyone would be doing that specific thing. I really struggled with being a perfectionist and I still do, not giving myself enough credit, knowing your value and pricing based on that, and celebrating those small wins. I also questioned myself if I didn’t get something the first time, I started which is absurd lol. The majority of the time we don’t just get the hang of something when we first start, it takes time. At times as a creative/business owner you don’t see that potential in yourself at times. But one thing I have learned so far in my life is that every pain, struggle, and the challenge is part of your story.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I actually branch into a lot of things, because you just never know where it may lead you. I am a professional worker, entrepreneur, and creative. I am most proud moving to Austin. It was not an easy journey but it has been one of my best decisions yet, especially since God is involved. I feel my ability to see the best in people sets me apart from others. I feel we all have something in us and the world is waiting to see it. God has given us a gift/talent and it can be based on the people we meet, how we treat others and etc that we discover that gift. Life is beautiful, and when you help others and carry them along even when you yourself are going through challenges it is such an amazing thing.
If you are creative and are questioning yourself or what you do, just know that you can do what you put your mind to! Do not be discouraged by people’s opinions! The only competition is yourself and you should always find ways to better yourself!
