Community Highlights: Meet Alexus Anderson of GIRLZNBOOKS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Anderson.

Hi Alexus, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began GirlzNBooks Club in September 2021. It started out as something I just wanted to do with my friends. And that’s all I thought it would ever be. Due to that I had funded everything out of my own pocket as this was just a hobby at the time. I reached a turning point in November when none of my friends showed up to the monthly meeting. It was at that point that I knew I wanted to make this public as I needed girls that were truly invested in being in a book club. I then posted about my bookclub in a Dallas Facebook group in order to see if anyone was interested and ended up with almost 200 women being interested. It was then that I know this was something that I would truly pursue. Of those 200 women I met my now Vice President, Danielle Odum, she really helped me turn this around. At the time I had had a different VP when Danielle joined but as soon as Danielle joined, she really was taking an initiative in helping me make everything happen. It was in that moment that I decided to make her my Vice President of GirlzNBooks.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road to say the least. As I mentioned earlier, I lost my previous VP, luckily, I had Danielle to fill in the gaps.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
GirlzNBooks is a black-owned for-profit organization. GNB is an all-black girl book club that is a space for black women that love to read to come together and do what we love. We open registration every November for the next year. We have monthly meetings as well as outings while this is a book club this is also somewhere to make friends to be a community and to give back to our community.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I’d say overall the luck has been good. Of course, there’s been some bumps in the road but the book club is getting better and better and I have so many plans for improvement next year. We’re only going up from here. Our journey is leading us to the ultimate growth.
