Today we’d like to introduce you to DeKaylon Greer.
DeKaylon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started back in 2016 at Texas A&M Commerce when I decided to take a break from things and focus on my craft in art. I’ve always had a knack for graphics and technology. However, I would’ve never imagined doing the things I have done in the past 6 or 7 year. I would do graphic design for the NPHC organizations to feed myself quite often. One day I decided to rent a camera from the library just to try out something new and found I actually enjoy it a lot. Shortly after discovering my new talent, I took it upon myself to practice with people, nature, buildings, or anything else that was willing to let me practice on them. My girlfriend at the time had a lot to do with helping me stay consistent, she would literally walk with me on nature trails while I worked on my angles lol. There will always be respect and appreciation here for her doing that.
After picking up a few skills while taking marketing classes, and freelancing with a plethora of different creatives in Dallas. I decided to start my agency DeKorations visuals. Now we offer Photography, videography, graphic design, social media marketing, our own apparel line, and how to start your own business classes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has been the hardest thing I have ever had to push myself through. Plenty of times I wanted to give up and do something else. Often times as a freelancer you don’t make the money you intend to. Business always comes in spurts mostly by word of mouth. I also felt like because I wasn’t sure how to network and gain a following, the amount of support I could’ve had in the beginning could be dramatically different. We still have our ups and downs but we have weathered the hardest parts of the storm for most minority business owners.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative director. I do photography, videography, graphic design, social media market consulting, and how-to classes. I am mostly known for my photography and graphic design all over Dallas. However, my specialty is colors and editing in particular. I am most proud of DeKorations. That’s been my baby since 2016 and it continues to improve year over year with me. What sets me apart from others is my ability to think globally on a long-term scale for all of my business ideas. I can cover just about every category of art with one major skillset. Design. I have a multitude of knowledge of managing a business big or small. Now im dabbling into the clothing line business. So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
GOD, Happiness, family, career, love. Those are the pillars of a loving and happy life. All you need is love and GOD to give to your family, career, and love life. Happiness comes from truly fulfilling your purpose and identifying what you desire to be in life. If you’re able to find yourself and experience what you want while following GOD’s purpose that’s an added bonus.
