Hidden Gems: Meet Nicole Moffitt of Lotus Bloom Birth Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Moffitt.

Hi Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey to becoming a doula started, unknowingly, with the experiences of my own births. I actually learned about the existence of doulas when certifying as a Dancing For Birth Instructor yet, did not understand the full scope of their duties and necessity. I was expecting our second born at the time of my DFB certification training. My goal for this birth was to achieve a VBAC. I did not know that my provider was vbac tolerant rather than vbac friendly and supportive. I was then bullied into a cesarean section. This birth outcome propelled me into learning how a doula could have benefitted me. This was the beginning of my trajectory into birthwork. Not fully ready to jump in to birthwork, some time had passed as I healed my heart, mind, and body from the traumatic birth experience. Now, I was 9 months postpartum from my second birth and accidentally ended up supporting my sister in premature labor. This was the first birth for me to witness. I knew from that moment forward I needed to certify as a doula and take the leap into the birthworld. My heart felt pulled to FOLLOW this journey to fruition. I attended a doula training and with the encouragement of my husband, I was walking out my journey to fulfill being a doula and business owner for the first time. I haven’t looked back since. A fire in my heart was stirred and a birthworker was born. I have been a professional doula for over 7 years. Every birth is different. Every single one. I thoroughly enjoy serving these birthers. I am constantly learning and growing in my profession. It is never dull by any means. I am grateful for my own birth experiences teaching me so much as well. Through this passion for birth and serving, I also served as a gestational carrier for a family. My surrogate journey added a whole new perspective and wealth of knowledge to my professional repertoire. I cannot imagine doing anything else. I absolutely cannot imagine going back to a brick and mortar. I love serving women in this capacity and I love being a woman business owner.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My initial hurdle was simply believing that a “passion” could be a livelihood. Also, just having the confidence to start; To start a business, to start supporting others in this momentous time of life, to start trusting the process. Birthwork has pros and cons. The “on call” life was and is the most challenging part of this profession. It was a huge adjustment of leaving at a moments notice with two littles in their early years. You miss family events or plans because birth happens when it happens. But the antithesis is that I get to be part of so much with my family too. I’m more involved in my family’s everyday events than I could ever be working at a 9-5.

We’ve been impressed with Lotus Bloom Birth Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well, I wear a lot of hats and in doing so, it encourages clients to have the option to work with me antenatal and postnatal. I am a birth doula, postpartum doula, sibling doula, Dancing for Birth Certified Instructor, placenta encapsulation specialist, Bengkung bellybinding specialist, certified Childbirth Educator, and birth assistant. Merely being allowed to be alongside them in this journey is an honor. It is always a joy to nurture this relationship and see it grow over time. I thoroughly enjoy walking with them fluidly from the blossoming period of the pregnancy to nurturing the bloom that they have brought forth. This is how I came up with the logo itself. The lotus is revered for its ability to thrive under challenging environments; the flowers grow in muddy water and often emerge unscathed from the murky depths, symbolizing hope, rebirth, strength, and resilience. This is the representation of my own birth experiences bringing forth the birth of my true ardor. I aspire to be a source of comfort, education, and unbiased guidance for my clients. My role as their doula when in their birthspace is to simply listen and respond to the support needed. I approach their birthspace calmly and with a heart of servitude.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
First and foremost, know your worth. And I’m not speaking purely or solely in regards to monetarily. I mean being confident that you can do this! Whatever “this” is for you. My “worth” is valuable to others and can be exactly what is needed to help them blossom into motherhood. And by doing this work, I am honoring and supporting that not only are babies born, mothers are too. All mothers need support in this journey and I’m grateful God has allowed me to serve through this bent.
