Conversations with Gracie Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie Howard.

Hi Gracie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was in sixth grade when I first got my hair colored! I thought it was such a cool and fun experience, but I had no idea I would actually be doing this as a career! In school, I always struggled academically and I knew I didn’t want to pursue a career with a lot of math and science, and reading. Somehow, I turned to hair as my final pick and I couldn’t be more excited for my career! I graduated high school in Frisco, TX (class of 2018) and went straight to cosmetology school! I recently opened up my very own SUITE! Ever since I started hair school, it was my dream to be in a suite! I’m in my own space and can make it however I want to make clients feel comfortable in my chair and I can feel happy while I work.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Every stylist’s journey is different, but I started as an apprentice at my first salon. It wasn’t the most glamorous thing, but that’s just where some people start! I personally am glad I started with an apprentice program. At the time, I just wanted to get on the floor, but to be on the floor, you need to do the salon cleaning and assisting. My salon offered continuing education as well, so I was in their cut program and I did learn a lot, but it wasn’t helping me grow since their education classes were one night a week. I eventually found another salon where I was taking clients and growing. The second salon I worked in was where I really grew more confident! I had clients coming back and it just felt really good to know people love what I do! After over a year, I moved from Frisco to Denton and I am now taking clients in my OWN SUITE! It has been a long journey, but I wouldn’t ask for it to be any different!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am very proud to say I am a haircut specialist! I love doing clipper cuts, long cuts, and texturizing! In cosmetology school, I really enjoyed haircuts as well! I was planning on just doing haircuts at my first salon, but there was a different path instead, which turned out amazing! I like being known as a cut specialist, but I do specialize in balayages and vivid colors! It’s always a beautiful result with vivids and balayages have such beautiful dimension and contrast!

What matters most to you? Why?
Family (my parents) matters the most to me. I am a proud Chinese Adoptee and I am so incredibly thankful for the life I was given! My parents have provided me with everything I needed plus more! They have endless amount of love and support and it’s all I could really ask for! I am so grateful to have such amazing and supportive and loving parents! As I’m growing up, I realize so much more my parents did for me and it makes me even more grateful for them.
