Today we’d like to introduce you to De Shunn Berry.
Hi De, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is De Shunn T. Berry, I’m from Little Rock Arkansas. I attended Little Rock Central High school. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Mass Media for television and motion pictures at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. I’m the proud owner and founder of Shunn B. Films and Shunn B. Photography, both based out of Little Rock, AR.
My creative journey started with acting in high school. I’ve done several productions with the school and other venues at that time. I also competed in theatre and debate competitions through the state communication department. I’ve received several rewards including becoming a member of the thespian society.
I always had a love for performing and being creative. I love theatre but I had developed a love for film. I started studying different styles and genres. I began purchasing my film gear and in 2019 I launched Shunn B. Films. With S.B.F. I was able to create a safe space for BIPOC creatives and actors. I’ve produced several student films, personal film projects, and a web series.
I’m working with my team to develop a few feature-length films. I was able to create a showcase titled “Reel Black Film showcase” with the help of other organizations to highlight black filmmakers, actors, and black stories from around my home state. Shunn B. Film has been able to take part in other showcases, film labs, etc.
I recently started a mentee program that allows high school students to have hands-on training on a live set and gain experience in the field. All though I’ve been able to accomplish a lot in a short period I want to continue to grow as a creative and continue to gain knowledge about my craft
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far my journey has been really difficult yet. The challenge is staying motivated and continuing to love what you do. As a filmmaker, there will be struggles and you will have to figure out how to overcome them. Finances are a major challenge but with proper planning and resources, you can survive this as well.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a writer, director, cinematographer, and actor. I’ve written and produced many of my productions and utilized all these different titles/jobs on other productions. I just love being in a creative space where I can let it all flow into cinema magic.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Attend as many networking socials as you can no matter how small. You never know who you might see or meet that can help you along your journey.
