Hi Mutmainah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my travel journey about 6 years ago when I was a freshman in College. I enjoyed networking and would often join organizations that allowed me to network and travel. I often received comments from people in my community about being a Black Muslim Hijabi and how women aren’t supposed to travel on their own. I took those comments personally and wanted to show people that my hijab doesn’t limit me.
I never really understood why many Muslim women found it difficult to integrate themselves with society and simply enjoy life. I took it upon myself to show people that It is still possible to dress/behave modestly in the travel world. From there I was able to create a platform to show people what it’s like traveling as a black Muslim hijabi. I enjoy creating content with my beautiful hijab and modest wear as I continue to share my experience.
After this, I received many comments about how people want to travel and have no one to travel with. Therefore, I decided to create my travel agent called “Serene Adventures.” Serene Adventures not only create personalized travel experiences and itineraries but also create group trips for others to join and see the world. We are no longer waiting on people to see the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road was rocky as I am also Nigerian lol. Safe to say my parents DID NOT agree with the way I was moving around from country to country, often in the air, not where they can see or reach me easily. I had to advocate for myself that travel is not only something that I enjoy doing but it’s also my self-care. Traveling has been so peaceful for me it helps me maintain my mental health. I can say 6 years later, they are starting to understand and trust that I will be safe wherever in the world I am.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Serene Adventures?
Serene Adventures was created in September 2021 and it simply means “peace” just like my name. This is what I do. I travel to find peace within myself. Serene was created after experiencing many failed trips because a friend canceled after we have made plans for the trip. I then started traveling solo because of this and shared my experience on my social media travel page.
Many others felt the same way as me and stated that they would love to travel but simply can’t find anyone to travel with or they have found traveling to be costly. This is when I decided to finally launch Serene as it has always been something on my mind. I felt much more confident in what I had to give and knew I had a community to serve.
Serene Adventures currently create personalized trips to reduce the stress on travelers which includes affordable plane tickets, place to stay, activities, and also places to eat! Serene Adventures also shares affordable plane tickets around the world for others who may be interested. Serene has planned 2 group trips so far this year. We went to Colombia in May and will be heading to Mexico in December! What makes me so proud about Serene is being able to encourage, challenge and help individuals travel and explore the world!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
What I have learned throughout my journey is that travel may be my self-care but it may not be others. This was a hard pill I had to swallow after constantly cracking my brain thinking about how friends A, B, C, and D canceled on me for my birthday trip to Jamaica.
Although it was very sad and heartbreaking to me, I didn’t want that to ruin our friendship and had to understand that although I would spend my last bucks on a flight, others may not be willing. In the same way, we have seen people spend their last bucks on food or even materialistic things, I wouldn’t.
