Meet DJ Kenny Lofton

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Kenny Lofton.

Hi DJ Kenny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, music has always been a part of my everyday lifestyle. I was the kid that knew all the new music that came out from beginning to end. I could hear a song 1-2x and would know its bars for bar. In middle school we got the opportunity to go to a venue where you could choose your profession and be that for a day, balance your money, and act as an adult; forgetting what it was called, but I always chose Disc Jockey (DJ). I wanted to control the vibes, keep people up to date on the current news and events, etc.

When I got into my undergrad at Indiana University, I was a man of many talents, but I was always the person that my Line Brothers, people on campus, family, and friends would ask for new music or to control the vibes for the event or parties taking place. So I did just that! I loved the opportunity to show people new music, rather than local artists, the hot music that was out, or even those fire songs people would skip over on the album and have to come back to because they found out later it was fire! So it’s been a long journey for this passion of mine!

After undergrad I came to Texas, knowing not a soul here, but I did my Master’s degree down in San Marcos while continuing to work and DJ. At this time I was getting opportunities outside the city and state, traveling and building my brand. I then transitioned to Dallas, where I continued to DJ; now I travel around the globe, internationally, while also doing corporate gigs and state-to-state gigs. I am proud of where I have taken myself in this journey, but in all, I feel like I’m just getting started!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road of DJ’ing is never smooth! You have to continue to be a student in the game and I vow to do that. When I started I would get no opportunities at all. Then it transitioned to getting opportunities and there was no compensation. There are days, even to this day, I am tired or life would just hit me all at once, but I continue to have this passion for reaching people through music. That feeling continued to drive the need to keep going.

The road is still not as smooth as I would like it to be, but I stay thankful, hopeful, confident, and confident that GOD has a way for me. I just have to continue to put in the work every day until it pays off and even past the amazing opportunities I come across. There always will be obstacles that I will be faced with, and even though I would love to be prepared to handle everything that comes my way, I pray that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When it comes to DJ’ing I enjoy having an open format, meaning I get to blend in an array of genres. I’d say I stay up to date with everything because I never know what gig or opportunity I will get a chance to set the vibes for. I say this due to the fact of DJ’ing corporate business gigs, internationally in other countries, birthday parties, etc., therefore having versatility comes as a key thing to tend to each crowd and ear.

My favorite genre to spin is R&B I’d have to say. The way it makes people feel can be anything in the emotional spectrum honestly! Being able to tug on different emotional heartstrings with people listening is what I’m most proud of. Getting random DM’s or people approaching me at a gig saying how I’m killing it or where can they hear more is amazing! Music is therapy to people, especially me, so being able to help people get those emotions out and walk away happy means I did my job!

And with that, I believe what sets me apart is my hard work and dedication. I have a few friends who DJ and associates who DJ, and I’d say we all work hard and have extreme talent. When I spin, I spin to create a vibe like no other, healing a soul that may be intact or broken. I do this for myself and my son, not for financial gain, but to show that dreams can become a reality regardless of the negativity, trials, and tribulations that you may encounter.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would like to say thank you first and foremost to GOD, without him I am nothing. I want to thank my son, he is my biggest supporter and I hope I can continue to make you proud, I love you. To my family, friends, and my DJ partners, thank you for always having my back, there are too many to name and give individual shoutouts but y’all know who y’all are.

To all the people that gave me opportunities to spin in any city, state, or country, thank you and I’ll continue to bring the vibes like no other. And to anybody that has come to support or lent an ear at a gig of mine, thank you; whether I know you or not I appreciate you and hope y’all continue to support me! With all that said… Welcome To The Kenny Lofton Lounge!
