Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Bowman.
Hi Shelby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Of course! My names Shelby and I am the owner of Designed by Shelby. I found a heavy passion for Graphic Design in 2008 when I was introduced to pre-college classes during my sophomore year in High School. Over the last 14 years, I knew one day I wanted to have a name for myself as a Designer – whether that was living in a small town and being a small business owner, or seeing my name in lights on a billboard in NYC (which I think is honestly everyone’s dream!) – and I understood that this dream was going to take a lot of time, patience and growth.
I started Designed by Shelby in 2018 with the hopes that one day I would become a successful Designer and started my business mainly focusing on helping friends and families with their small business dreams. Eventually, over the last 4 years, I have been able to pick up a great number of incredible clients – some small, some big – and was even approached in 2020 to create all of the graphics for the North Texas Fair & Rodeo. Being from Denton, was such an honor! I know I have so much growth left in my business and this is truly only the beginning, however, I am so proud of where I am today and the talents that I bring to the table.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is any path a smooth one? I think a lot of the challenges that I do struggle with and will always struggle with is the ability to get noticed. Get your audience to understand the passion you have behind your creatives, the excitement you feel when you share your work with others, and even the disappointment when you feel like your work goes unnoticed. Social media is very saturated these days and some so many incredible artists trying to stand out from others, find that support system and truly make your business what you’d like to make it can be one of the hardest challenges of all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main specialty is logo design. I like to say that this is the bread and butter of my business! I’ve had a lot of clients come to me asking me to help bring their branding (or rebranding) visions to life and it is truly such an honor to work with someone to create something so crucial that represents their brand and identity. I am always so proud of each piece and product that I create and I think having the ability to provide so many design styles to fit my client’s needs is what sets me apart.
I don’t have one specific style – I like to cater my skills to accommodate the style that my clients love and I believe that is an incredible talent to have. I also love creating illustrations and turning people’s images of a special moment into a lifelong piece of art. And aside from what I am known for, my talents dip into other fields including digital and print marketing designs/products and social media content as well.
What does success mean to you?
Happiness. Money can define success. Becoming famous or well-known can define success. But I truly find the most success and satisfaction when I finalize a project with a client and they are incredibly happy and appreciative of the results. A simple ‘Thank You or compliment can make any Designer feel like they’re successful at what they do. I might not be a mighty company, but I know I have provided so much happiness for my clients and to me, that is success in itself.
