Meet Jeff Burris of Black Tie Sounds and Lighting in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Burris.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started DJing in College Station, TX in 1995 at a country western bar. I made the transition into the wedding world in 2010 working with a friend that was a wedding DJ. He trained me for a year and a half as an assistant until a larger company in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex hired me as their office manager and a headliner DJ. After 2 1/2 years with the other company, I realized that I could make more money and charge the clients less if I went into business for myself. I started Black Tie Sounds in October of 2013, and our business grows every year that we entertain guests. I absolutely love my job, and I enjoy every second of being self-employed.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been mostly a smooth road, but January, February, July, and August are always slower months, so it adds a little bit of a struggle to learn how to allocate my fees to cover those months. Every year I learn something new about my business, and I am always trying to make the process easier for myself and my clients.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Black Tie Sounds is a single operation company. That means that I am the only DJ with the company. I specialize in weddings, but I also perform at birthdays, holiday parties, engagement parties, etc. I am know for how fast my response time is to the clients when they need something or have a questions, and my personal touches of getting to know my clients one-on-one. I am most proud of the fact that I am almost at 100 reviews on Wedding Wire, and that 99% of those reviews are a perfect 5 stars with one review being a 4.7 (the client told me that he wanted to make it look realistic, so I can’t complain). I believe that my attention to detail and personal touches set me apart from others. I really enjoy my job, and almost everybody that I meet and work with.

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I always wanted to be a radio DJ (until I found out how much they made). I was a normal kid with normal interests. In my late teens to early 20’s I ran into issues with the law that set me on a path to where I am now. My goal in college was to become a police officer, but my law issues stopped that from being a reality. After I started training with my friend to be a Wedding DJ, I remembered my dream of becoming a radio DJ. I realized that there wasn’t a better time to pursue my passion than the current time.
