Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Ryan.
Hi Tara, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started out working full-time in various roles while acquiring my degree in Business Administration. I knew I wanted to do something in marketing, advertising, and design, but I didn’t want to be pigeonholed to just one of these particular skill sets because I was concerned it might limit me in the job market.
I had an opportunity to work for a healthcare management company as a marketing coordinator. I had some excellent mentors when I started, and I learned a great deal about the medical industry and business in general and how to multitask.
Staying in the medical marketing field for over 10 years, I worked my way up to a marketing director position, expanding my knowledge and experience while also training and mentoring direct reports. The biggest learning experience in this role was partnering with entrepreneurs by providing marketing services as they embarked on establishing their businesses. Understanding how scary, labor intensive, and challenging, but also how rewarding it was, was incredibly interesting and gratifying.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but this precipitated what would turn out to be my reality when I later started my own business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning a business is a new venture for me, and like most things worth doing, it hasn’t been easy. Honestly, the biggest struggle has come from self-doubt. It creeps in, and you start to wonder if you are capable. The coolest thing about that, though, is that when you have those feelings, but you still overcome the obstacles you are like, “Hell yeah, I am capable!” Can I say that here? And not only that, but when you are doing well, your client is doing well, so it’s just a feel-good moment all around. You start to gain confidence and traction, and then boom, just like that, you are running a business. Aside from that, there are a lot of daily challenges, but what business is without those? You take everything as it comes and do your best to gain as much knowledge on the task as possible so you can formulate a plan to conquer it. One of my most considerable talents is knowing when to ask for help. I have an incredibly supportive husband who also runs a business. He has been a wealth of knowledge and a driving force for me to keep on truckin,’. I am also proud to say that over the years, I have managed to befriend and surround myself with insightful people from all different backgrounds who have helped me tremendously. Like the Beatles once sang, “I get by with a little help from my friends.”
