Hi James & Ursula, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
James Hawthorne: This opportunity literally fell into our laps. I’ve dreamed of owning my own business but never thought that it would be a reality. It took over a year of shopping our idea and business plan around but things divinely fell into place. Entrepreneurship is about more than finding something to do to make money. It’s about creating more opportunities to spend time with family, while maintaining a standard of living and creating a legacy to pass on to our children.
Ursula Hawthorne: I have always loved fashion and finding unique clothes and shoes. Wanting to start a business is something that came to us, and we decided to go for it by doing something we both enjoy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Finding the right location for our business was a challenge. Plus, along the way, we received some “No’s” since we are a new business.
Attracting the right vendors was a challenge since we’re a new business as well. But we were determined to keep looking to find the best products for our customers.
Working with an architect and general contractor to remodel the store with our vision in mind was challenging and took time. We did not anticipate delays in the remodel process. In the end the store turned out beautiful.

We’re a small family-owned and operated business with one location in Southlake. Our store offers some unique brands that no other stores carry in Southlake, and some brands are not carried in any other stores in Texas.
Offering several brands of shoes, our store is also unique as we carry Japan’s Spingle Move shoe. We’re the exclusive carrier of this shoe in the state of Texas. Spingle Move has been around for 20 years, providing quality and comfort with a very unique look and feel. This shoe will definitely allow you to stand out in a crowd.
Spingle Move also created a shoe exclusively for our store, Modern Fit Menswear. The shoe provides a classy look and cannot be purchased at any other store in the country.
Modern Fit Menswear also hosts mixers, comedy shows and other events.
We are most proud of having customers come in and tell us that they love the store. They let us know that they love the look and feel and enjoy the ambiance.
Our store truly creates a unique shopping experience by offering our customers a place to sit, enjoy an adult beverage, talk and shop. The store features a custom live edge bar top as part of the cash wrap where customers can sit. Our shoe and accessory room also boasts custom live edge shelves.
