Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaye Thomas.
Kaye, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started like most chefs, in the kitchen as a child! I grew up in a household the youngest of six children. I use to watch Emeril on food network every night like clockwork instead of kids’ shows. I was intrigued. I wanted to be like him. I wanted to put smiles on people’s faces through food like he did. My mother didn’t really know how to cook. She did the best she could, but I noticed myself and my siblings growing tired of eating the same things, so I started asking my mom to take over with the cooking. From there I knew this is what I wanted to do!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Cooking was my passion, and I was so excited about it up until I got to college. Once I got a taste of the stress that comes along with working in a high-volume kitchen, that passion faded away. It became more of a hobby. I didn’t want what I loved doing to turn into something I went to work every day feeling miserable about. I quit cooking so many times. Each time I would still cook to survive or cook for my peers and loved ones. Each time they would tell me cooking is what I needed to be doing. It has definitely been a challenge along the way, but when something is your calling, it’s hard to get away from it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m most proud of overcoming myself doubt when it comes to pursuing food. There was a fear of falling out of love again, not realizing I could do this myself and make it fun in my own way. That’s when I started my Business Flavor Fit. Specializing in gourmet meal preps, catering, and private chef services, I wanted Flavor Fit to be the opposite of a stressful high volume kitchen experience. I wanted to do the very thing that made me fall in love with cooking in the first place, putting a smile on people faces through my food! Flavor Fit is different from other catering/meal prep services because not only do we provide flavorful meals that are healthy, but I make my food my art! Each plate looks like a work of art! It’s fun, it’s eclectic, it’s healthy, and it tastes good!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people don’t know what it took for me to keep pursuing my food. It surprises people when I tell them I’ve been cooking for over 20 years!
