Rising Stars: Meet Furkan Borak aka “Blaze”

Today we’d like to introduce you to Furkan Borak aka “Blaze”.

Hi Blaze, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been a graffiti artist for 16 years and I’m based in Turkey. I was born into a family full of creative minds and talent. So, my interest in drawing and painting started when I was a kid. My dad was always good at drawings, and he used to make oil paintings and hang them up all over the walls of our home. I believe that I got my talent from him. My parents inspired me greatly, and their support led me to be an artist. I started doing graffiti when I was in high school by writing my friend’s name on paper with different styles and giving some shapes to the letters. Since then, I can’t stay away from drawing and painting. Beyond being an artist, I studied Electronics Engineering in Turkey and I moved to the DFW area after my graduation in late 2014.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not. It was in early 2006 when I started doing graffiti. There was no course or class that you can take and learn how to do graffiti. YouTube wasn’t popular at that time, so, I had limited resources and equipment. First 2 years, I was only sketching on paper. Later on, I met other artists and so they helped me to get thru all these difficulties. I have learned how to improve my lettering and coloring, from where to get spray cans or other supplies and which walls to paint in my hometown, etc. With passion and hardworking, I became what I’m today, and still, every day after, I’m trying to do my best and improve my skills in this art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do custom artwork, digital designs, interior/exterior designs, canvases, and murals. I’m more specialized in graffiti and lettering but I’d like to paint some cartoon characters as well. I have known as a detail-oriented artist because I always spare extra time and fix the paint marks or line mistakes in my art even if it’s a minor thing. That way, I always have clean and solid artwork.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think they are surprising most when they hear I have an engineering background and a master’s degree in computer science. I’m an open-minded, curious and multidirectional person. My motto is “Never stop learning because life never stops teaching”. PEACE
