Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Rosenberg.
Hi Shelly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I am so happy to be here on Voyage Dallas. I am an interior designer raising 3 children- all with cognitive disabilities like ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, and Down syndrome. Each child required special accommodations within our home for them to develop, progress, and succeed in school. I founded my company to share all of the knowledge I’ve gained over the past 25 years and help families thrive, regardless of age or stage.
The mission of Acorn & Oak is to demystify interior design and help make it easier for all families to make their homes safe and chic. I believe that interior design, truly supporting our unique needs, should be available to everyone, regardless of income. Why? In my opinion, what makes a comfortable home is more about the way it feels than the way it looks. This is exciting news because once we discover our sensitivities we can adapt our rooms to decrease stress and improve health with minimal investment.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Juggling full-time motherhood and solo-prenuership isn’t easy. I’m grateful to have the option put my kids’ needs first, so business growth has comes in waves as I have the time and energy to give it. Another challenge is the concept of disability itself. First, most people think it only has to do with mobility and a wheelchair. But there are hundreds of invisible disabilities! Second, there is an unfortunate stigma to the word. Humans are diverse and ALL of us have challenges. It’s not only okay to admit to needing help, but a beautiful thing to proactively support your best life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a degreed interior designer with certifications supporting clients with cognitive disabilities due to anything from genetic mutations at birth to stress, trauma, or aging. I help adapt or remodel people’s homes to help them with their daily challenges.
Both clients and colleagues trust my knowledge and first-hand experience. I’m now known as the go-to specialist for supporting the challenges that come with diagnoses like ADHD, Autism, or IDD (intellectual/developmental disability). My small line of therapeutic products (mattress pads and weighted blankets) is organic and healthier for both humans and the environment.
I am thrilled with the press coverage this mission is receiving by national publications like Forbes.com, Veranda Magazine, and Domino, but I’m most proud of shifting interior design from expensive and exclusive to simple and equitable.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I also have a degree in Public Relations and love connecting with others through writing, speaking, and social media. I actually have a fantastic group of supporters, friends, and colleagues in the digital world that I’ve never met in person!
