Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Byrd.
Hi Clayton, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started creating with glass in 2013 at a local glass art studio. Working with glass was something that really held my attention like nothing else. Flameworking, like many other things in life, requires a lot of time to build set skills. I buried myself in YouTube videos and spent time on the torch gaining experience. At first, a lot of my work left a lot to be desired, but soon things started coming together. After several years I felt comfortable bringing my art to the public. I have been able to vend some of my art through local venues and pop-up events. Glass has been pivotal in my life and will continue to be going forward. When I am stressed or feeling out of sorts. I spark the flame and start melting. The flames turn off all the other troubles of the world. You are only able to focus on the amorphous blob in front of you. I highly recommend anyone who has ever wanted to take a class to do so.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing of value comes without some suffering. If you want to become a great lampworker you will have to accept the inevitable. You will get burned and cut. Those are the facts, unfortunately. THE HEAT IS REAL AND FELT, you will sweat. The summer can be brutal, but when something comes out the way you wanted it makes all the pain and suffering worth it,
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a lampworker, specializing in functional art, pendants, and plant vessels. By far, I am most proud of my functional art. I love to create art that people can use and appreciate its beauty daily. What sets me apart from others is my drive to perfect my craft; I take user feedback to make a better and more beautiful product.
What do you think about luck?
I believe that you make your own luck by working hard day in and day out to perfect your craft. Whatever luck I’ve earned in life and business is due to working my ass off daily.
