Community Highlights: Meet Kathryn Nelson of Kathryn Nelson Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Nelson.

Hi Kathryn, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
It all started with my mentor, Pat, a Registered Interior Designer who helped me find my initial internship with Modern Luxury. Following the inaugural magazine launch for Dallas Interiors, I knew I had to be an interior designer. Having helped assist on the model homes setup alongside so many professionals, I was hooked. Pat educated me on how it was much more than decorating and explained how it would require me going back to school. So, night classes, while waiting tables by day, it was for my first semester of interior design school. After graduating from the three-year program at Dallas College (formerly El Centro), I stumbled upon a life-changing job with Paul Duesing Partners – long story short: don’t burn any bridges, y’all.

After 5 years of FF&E interior design work for leisure and lifestyle clientele (hospitality/residential) all across the United States, Mexico, and South America, I took a chance on myself and started my own firm. After three initial months of “me” time and setting up my business, I had my first client by March and was calling my professors at DCCCD for a new hire by August.

With the advocacy, continuing education, and amazing friendships found at ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) I have had 13 years of guidance, support, opportunities, and development to help forge who I am today as a person, partner, mom, business owner, boss, and interior designer. I’m proud to say I just passed the last of my three professional exams for NCIDQ and may soon call myself a Registered Interior Designer by the end of this year.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is never a straight or smooth road, but that’s what makes it so interesting. While I could go on for hours, my KND blog has lots of fun stories that dive into this more. Please check it out.

We’ve been impressed with Kathryn Nelson Design (KND), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
An award-winning interiors firm that specializes in high-end design services for residential new construction and renovations. KND imbues our clients’ designs with exceptional consideration for their lifestyle. KND has no set style…every property and space are unique and deserving of their own thoughtful, original design that speaks back to and respects the property’s architectural manner. The one thing we insist on is doing so in an ethical, honest, and mindful way. By using Eco-minded and sustainable materials, donating salvageable items to local charities, and reducing construction waste, we intend to help create a greener future for the design + build world.

Due in part to her love of the arts, travel, and gardening, Kathryn’s designs are infused with a lively spirit of unexpected elements grounded by her love of classical forms. Consideration for art, AV, lighting, landscape design, and energy efficiency are also very important. KND has a wealth of trusted and talented specialists to aid in the full-service design of your project. We can’t do it all on our own and we like to support other businesses, preferably small, fresh hip new startups or family-owned, whom we believe in.

We are currently working internally on more approachable price point package options for clients of all budgets because we truly believe that ALL people deserve good design.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Oh yeah! Yes, that’s a Pomeranian in my logo – supposed to be my one-eyed rescue Pom named Momma. Adopt don’t shop please and if you so choose, please only source your pets from ethical breeders. And get your pets spayed and neutered. Ok that’s all. 🙂
