Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Lorenzana.
Hi Leslie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey with makeup and art leads back to my childhood. I would have to apply my lip-gloss and liner at school since in my household, I was definitely considered too young to be wearing it. I would have to credit YouTube for teaching me the basics and my oldest sister because she bought me my first foundation and my first major essentials. A few years later, I would be introduced to the escalating quality of looks through the immersion of Instagram. Seeing the amount of dedication toward makeup for certain individuals made it seem as if they hired an entire Hollywood makeup team to achieve this. My constant experimentation, trial and error and my constant drive to top my last look and improve on technique have helped elevate my art. Outside of art and makeup, my story also includes me being a first-generation college graduate from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and a Minor in Psychology.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think one of my main challenges growing up was definitely that my interest in makeup and art came far too early. There was a stigma in my household that I was too young to wear makeup or even think about experimenting with it and that its usage for me was too inappropriate. Now, in my mid-twenties, I feel like my main challenge with makeup is having creative blocks. I feel like the industry is so saturated with amazing artists who create beautiful looks almost effortlessly that sometimes it becomes hard to differentiate your work and make it new or add new elements.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to believe that I am a jack of all trades when it comes to makeup. I mainly do glam looks; I like doing creative makeup, too (something you wouldn’t see every day. I’ve recently worked passed some fears and have done makeup for special occasions, and I loved the feeling of making a bride feel extra beautiful on her special day. I also love to go all out for Halloween and achieve popular looks that some would achieve by just buying the costumes, but I love to try and go the extra mile and make things look as accurate as I can with what I have.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I believe that sometimes you make your own luck. I have been blessed and am lucky enough to have an amazing support system and a large group of people, some of whom I have never even met in real life, who believe in me and champion my success. The many friends I’ve made over the years have all at least once played a role in helping me grow and encouraging me. Networking is important.
