Conversations with Sean Michael Beasley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Michael Beasley.

Hi Sean, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started playing guitar at around 15 years old, played in a few bands back in NY where I grew up. Played in a band in Florida. Later on, I got interested in the engineering side of it, attended the Institute of Audio Research in NYC, and got a degree from NCC. Had a few years of relearning guitar after having multiple aneurysm surgeries on my left hand. Then got approached by a friend to score a short film for him and did the audio on his second short film as well. This past year and parts of Covid I got back into just songwriting. It’s been an interesting ride.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anything is ‘smooth’ honestly. There’s always tinder being added to a fire in some way. There were a few years where it was a complete struggle in every way, mainly in my personal life. Marriage, money, relocation, mental illness. But as a songwriter, it’s always writer’s block. That’s the challenge. The problem I have with writer’s block is you think everything sucks. It’s not that you can’t write; you just believe it to be garbage. It’s how I’m learning from both aspects is the important part.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m mostly known (for those who know me) for my music, but there are some that know I loved doing film. I really loved doing it, I won a best score and best audio award from festivals for that work, so I’m proud of that.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My kids. My folks for busting their butts to buy me a guitar, my friends who support me even when it’s bad, the people that the song may be about. Most obviously, every musician I ever played music with.
