Conversations with Nasrah Salim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nasrah Salim.

Hi Nasrah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was younger, colors and art always intrigued me. I’ve always been crafty, but I started my art page during my senior year of high school at 17. There was an Islamic Art event coming up hosted by the youth center I was involved with. One of the conditions to enter was to link either our website or Instagram and I had neither so I figured an Instagram art page would be easier to manage for the moment. I’ve been experimenting with different mediums on canvases ever since

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although I had the thought of trying to make art into a career in the back of my mind, I knew it wasn’t ideal. Even in my senior year, I still had not figured out what I wanted to do. Because of what I was already doing with my art, business came to mind, but I was pushed more into Dentistry. Attempting to go down that path and knowing the sciences were not for me was a choice I knew was right, but balancing school and art was one of the biggest struggles I’ve faced

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As ironic as it sounds, I currently work at a Dental Lab. My current degree requires an internship, and I hadn’t been able to land one this past summer. One of my friends recommended a Dental Lab, and I hadn’t known it at the time, but I decided to go for the interview to see what it was all about. I’ve now been there for about 7 months, and I manage the lab a bit as well as design teeth. We work with crown, implants, and bridges, and it’s actually made me think twice about going into the dental field because of how related it is to the arts. I’m proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and learning a new skill, and I hope this will lead to a career I love doing every single day, even if it’s not in dentistry

What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I’m mostly focused on graduating and my art. From there, I’m planning on applying to jobs related to Business administration or maybe even staying at the Lab and seeing where it takes me. The biggest change at the moment would be finally getting my degree and knowing everything since high school was worth struggling through
