Community Highlights: Meet Jacob Dudley of Arbiter Weight Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Dudley.

Hi Jacob, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
The basis of my reasons for becoming a dietitian are rooted in seeing the health and livelihood of my own family slowly deteriorate. My mother was the inspiration for my passion to help others. She has always had the most giving and caring heart of anyone I know, and as a single mom who raised 3 boys on her own, her health had always been a struggle. I began my nutrition education as a classically trained chef, graduated at the top of my class in culinary school, and shortly thereafter, worked as the head chef of an upscale Mediterranean restaurant in Eastern Idaho. After several years in food service, I returned to academia to obtain a degree in nutrition and dietetics from Idaho State University while also competing in Division 1 Track and Field as a Decathlete. I moved to Texas in July of 2015 and proceeded to round out my educational journey by completing the dietetic internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX.

As a Registered Dietitian, I have helped over 3,500 individuals around DFW to achieve their weight, health, and fitness goals to date! With my clients, I pride myself on being a man of compassion, genuine care, and a desire to help educate and guide people to improving their lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The adversities I have faced in the world of nutrition are many. When it came to working in the hospital setting, nutrition is rarely regarded as a priority. Be it through the eyes of the administration or the patient. But that did not discourage me. I left the clinical nutrition world to pursue weight loss nutrition with a small handful of clinics who specialized in such a thing. However, contracts come and go in that setting. Over the last 5 years, I have written many protocols, infographics, and even full-on programs for these clinics and practices. All the while as a single-income household while my incredible wife was achieving her DDS from Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry (Now Texas A&M School of Dentistry). But the biggest challenge was being able to truly provide the top level of care that I wanted to for my patients and clients without the corporate side of the business tightening the leash.

Flash forward to Fall of 2020, I decided to take the plunge and start my own private practice, and thus, Arbiter Weight Management was born. The risk is that the facts would state that over 80% of private practice dietitians don’t last a year. That, and less than 3% of dietitians in the US even attempt to start their own practice. I am pleased to say that not only has Arbiter been around for a couple years now, but is thriving! I believe this is due to the fact that 98% of new clients are purely referral based, meaning I let the work speak for itself.

As you know, we’re big fans of Arbiter Weight Management. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Arbiter Weight Management is a company focused on improving health and optimizing weight loss in a fully customizable sense. Your program with Arbiter features professional counsel with a Registered and Licensed Dietitian that serves you based on your specific needs and goals.

We work to get to know you as a person, then we work together to tailor a program that not only fits your lifestyle but encourages you to build sustainable habits and a lifestyle you can actually sustain. We specialize in weight loss for folks who have tried other programs, diets, or post-bariatric who have had some success but regained the weight.

As far as a brand, we are not all about a big advertising budget. In fact, one of my favorite statements on the website came from talking to my business attorney when he asked about gimmicks. My response was, “No gimmicks. Just Science.” and that is exactly what I intend to keep up from now to forever.

What everyone interested about the program should know is that we are here to help you build a lasting lifestyle that works for you as an individual. No two programs are exactly the same. It’s not a cookie-cutter operation like some of the big brands, but that’s not to say those don’t work either. There is something for everybody here. You can expect to be treated like a human, a person. It’s a very simple program, but simple does not mean easy. So, if you come, be ready to never turn back to the way things were. The new version of you will be happier, healthier, and more vibrant than you could have imagined. But now that it comes with a little sweat and tears. From both of us, of course, because I’ll be right there with you every step of the way.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Some risks have benefits, in my opinion. However, the reward must always outweigh the risk. With starting Arbiter Weight Management as a company, the risks were similar to any for someone trying to start their own business. The financial risk was significant and doing so while being unemployed would not necessarily be considered as wise to most. However, I knew that running a private practice was exactly what I wanted to do. On top of that, I knew that doing the same thing I always had done, working a 9-5 for someone else, also carried its own risk. As well as leaving me wondering if I could ever do it myself.
