Hidden Gems: Meet Evan Lossing of Mathnasium of Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Lossing.

Hi Evan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hello! My name is Evan Lossing, and I am the Owner of Mathnasium of Allen! My family has been in the business of changing students’ lives for over 10 years now, and we are very excited to share what we’ve been able to do with Mathnasium here with our families in Allen, Texas!

I first began working with Mathnasium when I was 16 years old as a Math Instructor. I was a high school student at the time, and I thought I knew everything there was to know about math. I knew how to follow a process, get the right answers, although I didn’t really understand why the numbers were doing what they were or why the math was working.

As I started learning the Mathnasium culture, the different methods we teach, and how Mathnasium decomposes large and complicated concepts, my world was blown wide open! I realized that math was a lot more artistic and enjoyable than what school had led me to believe. For the first time, I was able to see why the strategies we had learned in schoolworked and was able to connect the dots between various concepts and ideas I hadn’t previously understood.

I continued to work as a Math Instructor throughout the remainder of my high school years and during college with the ambition of sharing my passion and joy of math with our students.

Once I graduated from college, I was presented with the opportunity to take ownership over the Mathnasium location in Allen, and I definitely could not pass up on it! I have now been running the Mathnasium of Allen location for 3 1/2 years and am happy to provide such a great service to our community!

Since joining the Mathnasium family, I have made it my personal mission to help show students that math doesn’t have to be mechanical, or tedious, or boring. Math is so much more than just problems and answers, and every day we strive to help students develop their love and understanding of math. I think that math is a lot more enjoyable when you know why we do it and why it works in the first place! Don’t you?

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not always! When the pandemic first started, there were a lot of things on my mind. How do we best serve our staff and families? How do we continue to create an engaging and interactive learning experience with students learning from home? At the start, there was definitely a learning curve. The technology, the updated safety and cleaning policies, new instruction techniques, etc.

The most difficult part of the pandemic was hearing about the students struggling with the transition of in-person learning to virtual learning. The switch, although was critical for student health and safety, did leave many students feeling confused and lost in their studies. Many students had faced, what many education experts have called, the COVID slide.

With our Mathnasium @Home program, we were able to continue serving our students and families safely online. We were able to help students master new concepts as they were being introduced in school, provide homework support, and help alleviate the stress brought on by the sudden shift to virtual learning.

With in-person learning resuming fairly recently, we were excited to see many familiar, as well as some new faces join us for in-center learning. Our goal is to help students combat the COVID slide and continue to grow in their concepts and overall enjoyment of math.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mathnasium of Allen?
Mathnasium is an all-in-one math learning center geared to help students, Kindergarten through 12th grade, catch up, keep up, and get ahead in their math concepts!

Our main focus at Mathnasium is to teach math in a way that makes sense for each of our students. We understand that no two students learn and understand math the same way. We believe by helping students understand the “why” of a problem or method, rather than just the “what”, allows them to better understand the strategies and math as a whole. With understanding comes mastery, and with mastery comes scalability. As students master these new concepts, they will learn more applications and adaptations of their skills.

At our learning center, we strive to create a stress-free, positive, and individualized learning experience for each of our students. Our students are always warmly greeted by name and are assisted by our friendly and engaging team of math instructors.
