Meet Kyler Redding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyler Redding.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I picked up a camera when I was 14 and that’s where it all started. I loved capturing cool or interesting images and making videos. Years later, I started a YouTube channel so I could make the kinds of videos I would enjoy watching. I watched a lot of YouTube videos to learn from other photographers and videographers. As I took more photos and made more videos, my skills really began to improve. Now, I do wedding and event photography and videography, along with portrait photography for a side business. It’s been quite a journey!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. I dealt with imposter syndrome for a while. Thankfully, that went away as I practiced photography and videography. But even then, I still had to learn how to do wedding and event photography and videography. That has been challenging, but I am grateful that the photographers I’ve worked with at weddings have been very patient and kind to teach me during the wedding day experience.

Along with that, I’ve dealt with a lot of disappointment from trying to be an influencer through my Instagram and YouTube accounts. I started my Red Relic Productions Instagram account in 2019, but it never gained much traction, and the same could be said for my YouTube channel.

However, I had an epiphany recently. In the end, my life will not be measured by the amount of Insta followers or YouTube subscribers I have but rather by the lives I touched around me. So instead of worrying every day about interactions on social media, I decided to step back. I stopped posting consistently, stopped creating consistently until I had something I genuinely wanted to post or put a lot of work into.

Since making that change in my life, I noticed the first video I ever posted on YouTube finally hit 1000 views after three years. In the two months since it hit 1000, it has already gained 500 more views! Along with that, I made a short documentary/vlog about my first tattoo, and because I put so much work into it (and people are always curious about tattoos), it gained 250 views almost instantly.

It’s like once I stopped struggling over the day-to-day interactions on social media, my work started getting noticed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a few different things that makeup Red Relic Productions. One is the Instagram page, where I show off various photos of the things I’m into. Most prominently, you’ll find animal photos and photos of Every Day Carry items, such as knives, coins, handkerchiefs, rings, and more.

I also have a YouTube channel where I vlog about my photo-capturing adventures, but also make videos that I intend to be more meaningful, such as “A N X I E T Y | A Visual Representation” and my Tattoo documentary/vlog. I have more videos planned that will be in the same documentary/vlog style.

Third, I have a podcast called The Feature Film Podcast, in which I, along with my friends Michael and Alex, discuss and geek out over movies. We like to revisit movies that have been out for a while and give our thoughts on the production of it, as well as the overall message we got from the film.

Lastly, I do Wedding and Event Photo and Video, along with Professional Video Editing for clients.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that being famous should not be the goal, but rather hard work on things you love will produce the best products. That goes for all areas of life, including work and family.
