Life & Work with Jose Mendez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Mendez.

Hi Jose, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was in elementary school, my favorite class was English because we got writing prompts and had to present them in front of class. I wasn’t always treated nicely, but when I presented my writings, everyone praised me for them, including the teacher. From then on, I’ve always had a love for writing.

Eventually, that love for writing spread out to other creative mediums. In high school, I took a graphic design class and became familiar with photoshop. Fast forward to today, I specialize in graphic design for artist and other clients I get on fiverr and I do videography jobs like music videos for local talent. My long-term goal and dream is to have a career as a film screenwriter and director.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a child, I was bullied a lot. I’ve always been insecure about many things so that has definitely held me back in many ways. I’m a shy and timid person cause of it so I feel like I’ve missed out on opportunities cause of it, but slowly, I’ve been working on it and trying to get out there more with improved confidence.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do graphic design ranging from posters to cover art for music artist. I also do photography & videography such as music videos for local talent.

What I’m most proud of thus far is a project I got to do with the company fiverr. In this project, I created a graphic design of a skull made of marigolds for their Hispanic heritage month celebration where the design was later placed in a virtual art gallery for everyone to see. It was an honor to be able to represent my culture through my work.

What sets me apart from others is my unique thoughts and creativity. Not saying that my way of thinking is superior to others, but rather that the way I think is not how anyone else thinks. That’s the case for everyone. Everyone has something unique to bring to the table. It’d be difficult for me to recreate someone else’s vision faithfully just as it’d be difficult for them to recreate mine.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about the city is the museums. I’ve been to two (can’t remember the names), but they were beautiful.

The highway situation is definitely something I dislike about Dallas. I don’t really have to go into detail since everyone that has driven on Dallas roads shares the struggle.
