Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Robinson.
Hi Kenya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began singing at the age of 5. I would copy whatever my mom would do because she sings as well. I know this because my parents have me recorded on cassette tape stating my age and singing.
At the age of 6, my dad gave me my first acoustic guitar, then at 7 my first Casio keyboard. Needless to say, my dad is a musician. It’s natural in my immediate family to either sing or play an instrument.
I grew up singing in the church choir and I was in choir at my school until my 8th-grade year. As I continued to sing, I knew that singing was one of my passions. The idea of recording a CD was admirable when I was young, but as I grew as a person and singer, my desire changed. I realized that my true desire was to be a background vocalist that was impeccable. Why background? It would keep me out of the spotlight. I’ve never really liked being upfront. Background is comfortable for me. I absolutely love listening to songs and paying particular attention to the “ear candy” that is present… namely vocal blends and musicality. In my mind, to be named as one of the vocalists that helped create beautiful blends that could be felt across the world and reach and capture the ears of many would put me on top of the world.
Although I have a single out that has propelled me to the front, I also desire now to be known as a songwriter. I actually wrote and partially arranged my single.
The single is entitled “He’s Worthy” and was released on October 1, 2021. I will be working on the next single as time permits, but so far “He’s Worthy” has blessed many people that have heard it. I am grateful for that.
This past Summer I was blessed to be a part of The 2022 Rhythm of Gospel Awards. I was blessed to win 2 awards, ‘Rhythm of Gospel Song of the Year’ and ‘Praise/Worship Artist of the Year’. To God be all of the glory!
I don’t take it lightly that I have an assignment to fulfill. I have served as a Minister of Music in the past and am currently serving as a Praise and Worship leader at my church, Unity Church in Mount Pleasant, TX under the leadership of Pastor E. H. Bratton, Jr.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. Making the decision to pursue ministry and fulfill the passion that has been placed inside of oneself can be a struggle. Sometimes, you may not know where to start. Other times, you know how to start but don’t have the right support system. Also, the person may have great support but no desire to fulfill the potential simply because they don’t see it like everyone else does. For me, everyone else saw the potential, but ME. I was the one that wanted to sing and be heard but didn’t want to be seen.
The struggle for me at first was pushing beyond myself and just going forth in GOD.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an 8th-grade Spanish Teacher. I am proud of the fact that I can share my knowledge and passion for other cultures with young growing minds.
I think what sets me apart from others is how I connect with the young people that I come in contact with. I’m always wanting to help someone be their best selves and teaching grants me the opportunity to accomplish that.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Humbleness is certainly one of the most important characteristics that will propel success in any area.
