Meet Molly Hardy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Hardy.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I learned the fun game of American Mahjong a few years ago with friends. After we learned, we were hooked and loved playing. A couple of years ago, I started teaching friends and neighbors the complex game and really enjoyed it. Word started to spread, and I started teaching a little bit each week. I now travel all over to teach! I recently made Instructional Mahjong Videos. They are short videos to help players with tasks like the deal, the Charleston, and more reminders.

I love sharing my knowledge in entertaining ways over Instagram too- Mahjong is a FUN community!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Chinese Mahjong (where American Mahjong is derived) is an ancient tile game so I am always mindful of the origins and observing all the rules. I think the rules and guidelines are what makes this game fun and intriguing!

I am always humbled by playing with individuals who have known the game for 50+ years. I try to observe and absorb as much as I can when I play with them in tournaments.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I teach American Mahjong to small and large groups. I teach mostly beginners, but I love adding in an Intermediate/Advanced Class as well. I specifically love to teach on the Mahjong Line’s bright and colorful tiles! My background in teaching (both my BA and Master’s) provided me with tools of taking something complex and breaking it down in a way for all to understand. Mahjong doesn’t have an age barrier; this joins all generations- a wonderful part of the game!

I am most proud when a student reaches out to me and says, “I played, and I won” or “I played, and I knew what I was doing!” People can be intimidated by this game because it does involve strategy and memory. However, I love leaving a lesson with students not only understanding the game but truly loving it.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
From the age of 3 to 10 my family lived in Wichita, KS. We had a huge pool in our backyard and loved to swim. I remember my older sister, older brother, and myself swimming all day and making up games.
