Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kee.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being let go was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was working for a large retailer in their corporate office for over two years when a new CEO took over. With it came change and restructuring. I was safe during the first wave, but in the second round, myself along with over 600 peers were let go simultaneously. It didn’t take me long to find another job in the corporate world, but with it came a sense of restlessness and I knew there was never going to be a better time to delve into starting my own business.
Planning was always something I had done, all throughout high school, going into college and even in corporate, on top of my usual job. It wasn’t something I gravitated towards, but seemingly found myself placed in that position. I knew I was good at it and it seemed natural to make the jump. What initially seemed like failure on my end turned out to be the push that I needed to make the leap. It has been quite the ride, but I have never regretted it for a second!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Behind any successful company are good people, and one of my earlier challenges was finding the right team members to help execute our events. It took some time, but I couldn’t be more thrilled with the team at Keestone. The planners and assistants are all truly warm, intelligent people with a heart for hospitality and the ability to find solutions to any obstacles that arise.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We don’t only just focus on the details and logistics, but we also take pride in our design work. Many clients reach out to us for assistance on that end, and we are always thrilled to come up with a blueprint that speaks to their aesthetic.
We try and make life easier for everyone involved by streamlining our processes and doing most things online, since our clients always appreciate anything we can do to save them time.
I am immensely proud of how each event we do gets better each time. Our team works so, incredibly hard to ensure what the clients want comes to life and it is always the best feeling when that vision is accomplished. We take the time to review each event done and apply lessons learned to the future. I firmly believe that being complacent gets one in trouble, and that one should never stop learning. Hence, I am always on the lookout for opportunities to continue our education and knowledge.
What were you like growing up?
I was always curious and loved to read. Drawing and painting were huge interests. Studying abroad was a passion and something I took full advantage of in both high school (Tokyo) and college (Beijing).
My family was transferred to Asia when I was seventeen, while I stayed on in the States to attend college (Texas A&M, whoop!) and I have lived on my own since then, so I’d consider myself pretty independent!
