Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lawrence.
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have loved nail polish since I was a little kid, and my love grew over time. I always wanted to see more colors and finishes than what you see in stores. Years ago, at one of my old jobs, a coworker introduced me to something called Indie Nail Lacquer. I had never heard of it before, and I was hooked instantly. It opened up a whole new world of nail polish to explore that I never even knew existed. I felt like maybe I had finally found what I was looking for all along. A few years ago, I looked into whether or not it was possible to start making indie nail lacquer myself. I started making it as a hobby and quickly realized I had a knack for it. That is when I knew that I wanted to start my own business making indie nail lacquer. I was nervous of course and I’ve always had a fear of failure that usually held me back from doing so many things. However, I realized that I would never know if it was possible if I didn’t at least take a leap of faith and try. With the encouragement of my family and friends I researched what steps I needed to take to launch my business, and that’s exactly what I did. I’m a very colorful person. You see it represented in my daily life from my clothes, shoes, makeup, etc. Colorful things just make me happy. So naturally, that would be represented in my nail polish. My husband helped me come up with a name for my business. I used a nickname I was given as a teenager and my obvious love of color and that’s how Sizzlin Shades Nail Lacquer was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road. My biggest obstacle was coming up with funds to launch my business. I officially launched in June of 2022. I know it takes a while to get going good, and I’m still trying to build up business. There is a lot of competition in this business. I have had ups and downs. I’ve had slow months and busy months. It can be hard sometimes for people to want to try new brands of nail polish if they have a favorite brand. It’s definitely a learning process.
We’ve been impressed with Sizzlin Shades Nail Lacquer, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business Sizzlin Shades Nail Lacquer opened in June of 2022. I handmake and handmix all of my nail polish in small batches. All of my polishes are cruelty-free, vegan, and 5-free. The 5 free means my polishes are free of certain types of ingredients that aren’t really used anymore like formaldehyde. I make all kinds of nail polish colors and finishes, but I would have to say that I’m probably most known for the quality of my formula and making very glittery, shiny, and color-shifting nail polish. I strive to make quality, unique nail polish with some pretty unique names too. I’d have to say that I’m pretty proud of my accomplishments with this business and the quality of my products. It also makes me proud when I hear my customers’ feedback about my products like how long they can wear a polish without a chip in it, etc, and how I’ve gained some faithful customers.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I have had some great opportunities since starting, and I’m lucky to have met some great people and friends along the way. I think I have had mostly good luck so far.
