Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Karsnick.
Colleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up I always had a passion for cooking and baking so as soon as I graduated from high school I went directly to cooking school where I learned every aspect of the kitchen from the mother sauces to soups, butchering meats to my favorite……desserts!!
Has it been a smooth road?
Unfortunately the kitchen is still very much a boys club. I’ve had male chefs working under me and they did not want to listen to me simply because I’m a woman. You’re seeing all these stories coming out now about all these male chefs harassing their female employees and that is very accurate.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Colleen’s Cakes story. Tell us more about the business.
I started Colleen’s Cakes 26 years ago as a side business while I was working full time in restaurants. Years later I became too busy with cakes to go into the restaurant! I specialize in wedding cakes and my number one flavor is White Chocolate mousse which is the very first flavor I started with. I am most proud of the fact that I started this company with nothing but my degree and now years later I have over 7 awards including the Hall of Fame for my cakes! I think what sets me apart from my competitors is the quality of my cakes and my personal customer service which is evident when you read all of my reviews!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The wedding cake industry I don’t think changes as much as the trends do every year. One year it’s all about cupcakes and cake pops then the naked cake, Right now everything is texture and metallic everything!! Who knows what they’re going to come up with next but just remember the cake is the centerpiece of the whole wedding. Very much a piece of art!! But one you can eat!!
