Life & Work with Ricky Terrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Terrell.

Hi Ricky, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started painting as a means for healing, but I never knew it would develop into a full-time career. It became the one thing that continues to heal me and assist me on my journey to releasing things that no longer serve me. Painting has not only transformed my life, it saved my life. Creating has become a part of my daily regimen, I feel my absolute best when there’s a paintbrush in my hand.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My art journey has been filled with moments of eb and flow. Some of the biggest struggles I’ve faced were being overlooked for opportunities, low sales at times, and a few racial encounters due to the fact that I make black art.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an abstract/conceptual artist. Sometimes I hate saying that it sounds so boxed in lol. But mainly I paint whatever I can get my hands on, whether its clothes, shoes, body painting, or on canvas; I feel like I push myself to the limits just to see what my mind will come up with. Although my art is mainly known for the intricate, layered, geometrical backgrounds, my work is also recognized by the stories I tell. Each painting depicts my experiences of heartbreak, trauma, loss, bouts of depression, alignment, and resurrection. Here and there I like to pay homage to the things that shaped my childhood experience but mostly I create work from a very vulnerable and authentic place using the canvas as my diary and sharing my thoughts with the world. I’m most proud of the fact that I even made it this far. I’m almost 7 years in as a Visual Artist and it is NOT easy but it’s so worth it. My work by itself sets me apart from others and the fact that these paintings have helped the healing process for so many people.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel like the ability to be humble, open to healthy criticism, and the willingness to keep learning, and always remain a student to my craft are significant characteristics to my success.
