Rising Stars: Meet Clay Montgomery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clay Montgomery.

Hi Clay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been fascinated with the way things were done by our ancestors and starting a Blacksmith business let me explore that. It also let me help keep a dying trade alive. I had been carrying around an old piece of railroad track for 20 to 25 years with the thought that someday I would use it as a starter anvil. In 2016 I retired from a management position and the blacksmithing journey began.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Beginning a small business is extremely difficult. People not knowing what we make or where to find us is challenging. Our website been instrumental; however, joining GO TEXAN program has opened many doors for our business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We create quality signature pieces using traditional blacksmith techniques that will last for generations. I specialize in BBQ utensils, hooks, handles, and other decorative pieces. Each piece that is made has details incorporated that set it apart. I also take custom orders for branding irons and any other pieces a customer might want created. Certain pieces can be engraved with the customers’ information, such as a name, business logo, or ranch brand.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
The Idea of blacksmithing has been with me for decades and I had this old piece of railroad track with me thinking someday it would make a good starter anvil. It wasn’t until after retirement the anvil, i.e., railroad track was finally put to use. Since then, I have upgraded to a “real” anvil, but the track will always be with me. I would have to say the most often asked question is “Do I make Knives” my answer is “no.” It is very easy to become locked into one specialized area of blacksmithing, I wanted to explore the many different avenues.
