Today we’d like to introduce you to Hibah Ansari.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My interest in photography began in high school, but I didn’t start taking it seriously until I was halfway through my undergraduate studies. I started off with digital manipulation but quickly found that the photography I enjoyed the most was candid portraiture. I loved that I could preserve a single moment or candid gesture of my family and friends through photography. My friends started encouraging me to take gigs, and eventually, I found myself photographing graduation portraits, weddings, parties, and more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been an enjoyable one. I think a big challenge in the beginning for me was nerves–I was terrified of ruining the photos of someone’s special day or of sending them work they wouldn’t like. Over time, I’ve found that preparation calms these nerves. Packing backup equipment, learning from more experienced photographers, and trusting myself have been key contributors to my growth as a photographer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d like to think that what sets me apart is my photography style–I like to focus on candid imagery. I prefer to be the “fly on the wall” (which is admittedly difficult with chunky, noisy camera equipment at times) during events and capture the smiles, hugs, glances, tears, and excitement that people usually hide when intentionally posing for a camera. I like to lean into the unique aspects of each person/couple and their dynamic. This doesn’t necessarily mean avoiding poses, because every individual/couple has a way of making a pose their own.
