Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Sibley.
Hi Robert, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I was a child God made me a storyteller. My earliest memories are of me telling story to my best friend as we sat on the phone. Growing up this only continued grow I fell in love with Comic books, anime, and any form of media that had a compelling story. This inspired me to write fiction stories in my free time filling up the pages of my 150-page spiral notebooks from front to back. Once I graduated high school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, make movies. I needed a way to get the ideas that ran circles in my head out. The only thing I knew to do was to pursue a degree in Animation & Filmmaking.
So, college was the next step for me, and it was a blessing. College allowed me to have a set time to develop ideas into fully finished projects alongside other young filmmakers that would become lifelong friends. Project after project I was able to craft my skills. This time of development in the fundamentals is still getting me through the projects I take on today.
After College one of the most life-changing events of my life happened the death of my mother and as a Momma’s boy from a single-parent household this was devastating. but I learned a valuable lesson through it all “God can bring redemption from any situation” through her death I was re-born. I became a man who had to achieve success. At first for survival, you see I had nothing after she passed to the point, I was near homelessness by the good graces of a relative I had a place to stay but nothing to my name. It was time to start building.
After a year spent in New Mexico (where I re-discovered my love for Music and God), I moved up to Dallas Tx. Since I’ve been here, I have continued my storytelling by teaming up with local filmmakers and creating amazing short films that have been featured in several film festivals around Texas. A new love for music production has began to grow in me. Over the years of my life, I have played several instruments and with a new expression of my soul through music I now can add singer/song writer to the list of things I love creatively. the final Goal for myself is to continue to grow my production company Black Robot into a Creative media-making machine. including producing Films, Music, Podcast, photography Books, and whatever my team and I can imagine.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been an easy ride. The hardest struggle is defeating the old version of myself on a daily basis. I can deal with the struggle life brings my way. Those usually solve themselves as time passes but when you have to fight old ways of thinking, old habits, fear, and a lack of love for yourself that can be the biggest challenge.
My biggest obstacle has been getting out of the way of myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
It may be basic, but I just like to consider myself an artist. I’m willing to work in any media digital or not if it delivers the idea, I have in an impactful way.
My specialization is in photography, directing, writing, and producing from writing stories and writing songs I bring those stories to life by collaborating with other artist (actors, singers, painters, etc.)
I’m most proud of the growth in me not only as an artist but as a man these past few years
The thing that sets me apart is my ability to connect with other people. I don’t care for small talk so my mission with others is to be as intentional as possible. I’ve notice when you take the time to get to know someone’s story the connection you form with them only works to enhance the art that you are making
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mother first and foremost deserves all the credit for rising a young man all by herself (love you mama)
My sister is next she let me sleep on her couch when I first moved to Dallas as well as being a woman in my life that encourages me and see the best in me even when I don’t.
Lastly, I would say my friends and community. There are way too many to name here but it is always amazing to have a group of friends who challenge you to grow. you become the people you hang around and I can say I hang around men and women who always direct me towards the light when I want to walk in the dark
